Las Vacas y las montanas
Pretty view of the campo (countryside) Hello again! I have a few more things to add in here. Today, Sunday, was another beautiful day in Spain! I slept in, which was amazing, however, I did not enjoy the church bells ringing at the top of every hour for 5 MINUTES straight! I just kept on lying there thinking if it was ever going to stop. And then it did…and then it’d come back an hour later.
Emily and I walked over to a field right next to the residencia to watch a futbol (soccer) game. The Spanish LOVE their soccer so it was fun to watch. They are super aggressive and intense and its funny to hear them yell and argue in Spanish. Actually, there was a huge game futbol game last night. It was Real Madrid vs. Barcelona. They are huge rivals, so it was an intense game. I’m actually not sure who won though! Anyone know? So Emily and I watched the rest of the futbol game and then decided it was a good time to leave when one of the guys started to strip down on the field and was only in his underwear. We felt a little awkward sitting there when it
Las Vacas y Toros
Are they fighting or kissing? looked like we were there to watch him strip down. We really had just continued to talk after the game was over.
This afternoon 3 of the Spanish girls invited us to go on a loooong walk with them. We walked for about 45 minutes one way through the countryside of Avila. It was beautiful! I loved the fact that we were doing something different than looking around at buildings. Spain’s countryside is beautiful. I saw my fair share of animals today too. It’s almost like I was at the zoo. First, we saw a horse…just lying in the middle of the grass right by where we were walking…no fence or anything. Then we saw some sheep, goats, and cows. The sheep and cows were fenced up, but the goats were not. I had a few staring me down…I could just imagine one of them charging after me with their horns and me running around and screaming. Haha! Once we got to the end of our walk up to the top of this tall hill, we had an amazing view of Avila and the countryside. It felt amazing to sit up there in the warm sun, with a cool
breeze, and look out at this amazing view. It reminded me of Ronda in southern Spain when I was there two years ago with some girl friends. It was amazing. It was also a lot of fun to talk with the girls. It’s amazing how much Spanish I pick up when I am hanging out with them. Words just start coming to me and I learn so many new vocabulary words or how to say things correctly. I now see why immersing yourself in the culture is the best way to learn the language!
One more thing. While I am in Avila, I have to do a service-learning/volunteer project. I decided to see if I could help out at a language academy that I pass by every day on my walk to and from school. I stopped on in, explained who I was, what I needed to do, and if there was an opportunity for me to help. The lady was so excited to have me there. She’s originally from Ireland, but she married a Spanish man and lives in Avila now. She started up the language academy. There were also 2 other girls there, one from Ireland and
Goats
A goat trying to climb a tree! one for the US (New Mexico). Bernie (the lady from Ireland) asked me if I could stay and help out after I was done with my 8 hours of service because they really needed the help. She said that she would pay me (a little extra money would be nice). So the next day I asked her how much I would be getting paid and she told me 12 euros which is about $14.50 an hour! Haha, I was shocked, but then excited that I had said yes to helping out more! I love helping out there. It’s a lot of fun and the kids and people are so nice and friendly! I’m really excited about this and the fact that I got a job in Spain without even trying to!
More soon hopefully! Hasta luego…

It's soccer, afterall...
Just thought you'd be interested in hearing that the Real Madrid and Barcelona game ended the way that every soccer game ends. It was a 1 to 1 tie...futbol can be so exciting, can't it?
