How strange to land at a warm, sunny airport, whilst still wrapped in a thick jacket from the cold, damp airport from which we departed just a few hours earlier. Coats off and immediately you change into a more Summery mood. Discovering a beautiful blue swimming pool just in front of the apartment added even more sunshine to my smile and with a belly full of wonderful local food; it's time to start exploring this unique volcanic island.
Lanzarote is Volcanic in origin and is the fourth largest of Canary Islands (845km2) in Atlantic Ocean. The name in native language was “red mountains". The Volcanic landscape appears much as after the eruption.
What will stay in my memories and what I would like to share are those places:
Jameos del Agua Is volcanic cave with collapsed roof and is part of the volcanic cave system formed about 3-4000 years ago by the eruption of the Corona volcano. This place was turned in to Swimming pool, gardens, restaurant and Auditorium which has around 600 seats. When walking alongside of salted water Lagoon (Jameo Chico) you can see there species of blind albino crabs which you can’t anywhere else.
The Cave of Los Verdes Formed around 3000 years ago during eruption during Corona Volcano called also Green Caves. Over 6km long tunnel which only about 2 km are open to the public and have been used also as shelter from Pirates that once tormented the Island. This longest Volcanic Tunnels in the World have 1.6 km under the sea tunnel and has not been fully explored. Some lowest part of the cave is used as concert hall. This place is waiting for you to come and get some rewarding surprise.
Mirador del Rio, Lanzarote What a spectacular and amazing view which been used also as lookout point. You can see Chinijo Archipalego which parts are La Grosiosa, Montana Clara, Alegranza and islets of Roque del Este and Roque del Oeste.
Timanfaya National Park Is one of the must place. Few meters below the surface temperature reach between 400-600 °C. You can witness how hot the area is. Water poured into a bore hole erupts seconds later as steam, dry brush thrown into a hole catches fire and you can taste food cooked using geothermal heat.
The last eruptions were in 1824 but this part of island appears as just after. When more than 100 volcanos rose up and created The Montañas del Fuego (Fire Mountains) between 1730 and 1736 and devastated this part of the island. The only way to go around this area is by coach trip or to take Camel ride across the Volcanic landscape.
El Golfo (Charco de los Clicos) The black sand that separated and filtered sea water created the Green Lagoon. Weird rock formations contrasting with lagoon and black sand make this place very interesting. Nearby shop selling collection of crystal founded around and in village you can eat very good food while enjoying the view on sea.
Los Hervideros Walking around the cliffs and watching waves crashing in to caves which have been eroded by lava flow is something you will want to do not just once. Sunset and sunrise will blow you away.
Lanzarote Beaches Of the North white sands, golden sands of Puerto Del Carmen and black sands at Playa Quemada. All have something special in to. When you there you just would like to try them
all. It is worth to get up for sunrise for forever memories.
Puerto Del Carmen, Lanzarote Puerto Del Carmen on the east coast offers range of activities for everybody. Many different cuisine restaurants, bars, shops, fishing port are around Playa Grande beach.
