after pamplona we were all very happy to lie low for a few days. we had a rough start the the day as we were up early to catch the 7am bus but once we were all packed up and ready to go we got to reception to pick up our passports to find that the 24hr reception was no longer, after calming down alex and a few hours we jumped in a cab and headed into town to pick up the hire car. after much discussion i was nominated as the designated driver, so after some very yummy spanish omlets we were off. there was only a few boo boos in the first few mins like not being able to find the headlights in a tunnel but driving on the other side of the car and road wasn't as challanging in the begining as i thought. we drove though some stunning country side as we passed thought the Pyrenees mountrains and into basque country, there was alot of road works going on so it tool a litlle longer than we thought to get to san sebastian. once in san sebastian we were at a slight disadvantge not having a map
of the city area, so we got quite lost in a residencial area before we stumbled across the city and found a carpark because by this point my nerves were a little shot and it was going to be eisier to find an information point by foot. we eventally found an information shop and got all the info we needed to find the camping ground and maps of bilbao which whould be our next stop. it was then back to the car to go find the camping sight, it turned out the camp site was on the top of a surounding mountain and turned out to be quite nice. we pitched our new tent which we have fondly named the mansion, then went on a mission for food, the boys by this point had been living on tuna and other canned goods for over a week and saw no reason to stop here. we played yet another game of knock poker when our neighbours from a few tents down invited us around for a few drinks, so we spent afew hours chatting before going to sleep. damo now had a room to himself with thanx to his annoying cough because
lach decided to sleep in the car.
day two was a little slow to get started as it was cold and raining, but we eventually made it into town to see the sights of san sebastian. we were on a mission to walk up to the top of a small mountain to see the giant statue of saint sebastian whan it started to rain again, luckily we hadn't made it out of the town so sheltered in a little shop where alex and lach bought giant pretzles covered in chocolate and i had an oj to pass the time. we soon realised the rain wasn't going to stop so looked for a place to have dinner, after a fair while we found a place called don vitos where i had possibly the bigest meal i'd had since barcelona, it was breakie lunh and dinner all in one meal, steak, salad, chips, eggs and mushies yummy! it was then back to the tent for an early nights sleep.
we packed up the mansion in the rain the next day which was a bundle of laughs in it's self but we managed to get everything into the car for the
drive to bilbo, it got a little hairy when it started pelting down with rain on the freeway but that cleared up reasonably quickly and the weather was beautiful from then on. once we reached bilbao even tho we had a map we still got lost! there was a whold lot of road works going on so we ended up doing laps of the roughest part of town but eventually found our way into town and went on the hunt for some info on a camp site, we soon found out that bilbao dosen't have a camp site so we needed to head back towards san sebastian to a place called sopolana. before we left bilbao we found a kebab shop as it was sunday and nothing was open for some lunch then onto the gugenheim musem which we wandered around the outside but didn't go in cos it was quite pricey. we found an internet cafe on the way back to the car to catch up of some mch needed internet time. the camp site wasn't hard to find, we were very plasently surprised that it was the nicest out of all the camp sites we had stayed in,
it was the only one with a bbq and a pool, we were very happy little campers, pardon the pun. our new neighbours were a lovely english couple who we spent several hours chatting to over a drink or two.
monday was our last day in spain so we thought we would spend our time wisely and lie on the beach for afew hours, we swam and sunbaked the day away until siesta was over so we could head into town to get some meat to have a bbq for dinner. when we got into town we found that this sleepy little town had siesta from midday till 5.30! unbeliveable, so we found the only supermarket that was open and bought all we needed to make gormet hamburgers. my eyes were certainaly to big for my belly as i only got though half of the food i bought but the boys ate their weight in burgers, after dinner the four of us went for a walk to the top of a nearby hill with our neighbours tom and kat to watch the sun set over the ocean, it was so beautiful and the perfect way to finish off our
spanish leg of the trip.
the next morning it was back to ipswich to say with alex's family for a few days to recoup for our big 24 day tour!
