North of Spain

It was the morning of my birthday- after a quick breakfast we decided to head straight to Buckingham Palace to view the tour de france (or farce!) as it was starting in London this year! i had my day planned out which included sitting down and watching the cyclists zoom past us all day! Its those days of hard work that I enjoy the most.
The event was packed with people- all of London had come out to celebrate my birthay and as a side- watch the tour de france!

By 4.30pm we decided to leave- and went home to rest our legs and recover for the arrival of my sister and santo expected the next day- or that is what I thought was planned! As we walked into the house I took my shoes off and went to the bedroom to put them in my cupboard- my sister and santo were there and had been there since midday
waiting for us to return! As I open the door her first words were not "surprise" or anything like that-
it was a roar that sounded like a pack of lions had been enclosed in my room for three days without eating-
raaaaaaaaaoooooorrrrraaaahhhhhhh- something like that said really loudly with the intent to scare-

i wish i could say i fought the invader or anything of the sort- however- i took two steps back and threw my shoes at her like a girl- followed by some traditional aussie colourful language- really i was shit scared for about 5 seconds not knowing who was there, what was said and why they were there- finally my blurred vision returned to normality to see my sis and santo- ALL my family knew about this surprise except me!- It was a great surprise-

We toured London for the next two days and then headed off to the north of spain for our planned trip- Bilbao, Pamplona and San Sebastian-

Bilbao- A small city in the middle of a valley surrounded by rather large mountains with two or three really interesting buildings: The Guggenheim Museum, Santiago Calatrava bridges and airport and a promenade along the river which makes for a nice walk! Other than that it is quite industrial.
We went straight to the Guggenheim museum and along the way enjoyed the walk along the promenade by Ibaizabal river and spent most of the day in the museum checking out the modern art works on display! and ofcourse i looked at every detail of the building.

Pamplona: The place to be this time of year- we would have loved to stay more than just one day- The Festival of San Fermin has been celebrated since at least the 14th Century as has the running of the bulls which commences at 8.00am when bulls are released for the 800m run to the bullring- of course i didn't run! However the town is in serious party mode all day and all night- Everyone wears red and white- we had to buy our outfits there because we felt like outcasts in our jeans and t shirts! There are free concerts, they bring their saints out of the cathedral, they do traditional dances through the streets, there is traditional music and food and ofcourse there is a whole lot of beer and alcohol everywhere! The place is a must see and deserves more than a day!

We left Pamplona all in one piece- no gorges by the bulls and headed to San Sebastian for a relaxing day at the beach!

San Sebastian: A beautiful beach- pretty enough to rival our beaches- however- it is the summer relaxation area of the rich and famous! We were neither so we felt the substantial price difference but this does not take away from the natural beauty of the place- we spent the whole two days eating prosciutto, grilled capsicums, cherries, bread and ice cream on the beach! I think Claudia particularly enjoyed the beach!
