Doy gracias a .. 'International Thanksgiving!'

Yesterday, (Saturday 27th Nov) we had Thanksgiving in our flat!

My housemates, Danica & Rachel are American and clearly it is an important & nice celebration to have. So we organised a get together, for all the language assistants in Estepa to come round, bring something to eat & drink and have our own 'International' Thanksgiving.

It was on the wrong day, it was raining outside, it was chaotic, but it was amazing. There were our French friends, Spanish friends (& one of our teachers that we work with!) Americans & Brits, 14 of us in total (a bit of a squeeze in our living room!)

I was on mash potato making duty, Danica made some great apple pies & Rachel (something I've never tried before but loved) a sweet potato casserole (with marshmallows on top!). There was chicken instead of turkey, gravy, yukka, green beans & onions, stuffing, devilled eggs and salad too, and actually there was enough for everyone and a few seconds! So it worked out really well.

It started at 4.30 and went on until 10.30. Everyone spoke in Spanish as our French friends don't speak English and not all the Spanish people speak English, the common link we all have is that we can, and enjoy, speaking Spanish. I really love that usually I would never be able to communicate with everyone, but because of this, we can. We all 'gave thanks' in Spanish too, which was nice, and different. I really enjoyed it.

Afterwards we went out for tapas haha .. more food. Surprisingly. Followed by drinks, lots of drinks. Too many for me, in particular. We went to a few different bars, danced a bit, drank a lot, spoke more Spanish (which generally improves when I've been drinking .. whether or not it makes sense is another matter) and stumbled home around 4.30am.

A busy, but wonderful, first (and International) Thanksgiving experience 😊
