My husband and I spent 10 days in South Spain. We stayed in Rota, but visited many of the towns in the Andalucia region such as el Puerto de Santa Maria, Cadiz, and Seville. The purpose of our trip was two-fold: to visit my cousin, a Seargant in the U.S. Air Force who's serving a 2 year tour in Rota, and to celebrate my 40th birthday (which was in February). Late October was the perfect time to visit as the weather was mild and clear - not too hot and not too cold; however, there weren't too many visitors there. Rota is a beach resort town, similar to Destin or Panama City Beach, so tourists tend to populate the town during the summer months. The lack of people didn't bother us as it gave us a chance to really experience how the residents live without catering too much to the tourists.
