March 8, 2008 Julie and I went to Ronda today. We had a very confusing start to the day because the bus we were supposed to take, and that we got on, ended up being the wrong bus. So about 5 minutes before we left, we switched buses. It was weird though because they were both the same company, and both had Ronda as their destination. We were so confused, but thankfully got on the right bus! The ride was about 2 ½ hours, and when we finally got there, we got a map and figured out where the Puente Nuevo (New Bridge) was. The New Bridge was built in the 18th century to connect Old Ronda with New Ronda over the Tajo gorge after previous attempts at building bridges had collapsed. We were able to ... read more

Yesterday my friends and I went to Ronda, Spain. The day started out with me packing up all of my things to move to my new (and permanent) apartment. My friend Willem and I then got on the bus (number 8, the favorite) to head towards the train. Our bus driver was obviously in Spain mode and decided he was going to take his time getting to the stop. When we finally got there, we had to run to the train station and got there 30 seconds late, just in time to see the train leave. We had 30 min before the train had to leave, so we headed to get some coffee. This little hole in the wall place looked sketchy, but simple enough and we sat down. They gave us two cups of coffee, ... read more

Ronda is by far the prettiest city I've visted in Spain. It is settled between mountains and has a river running through the city forming a very deep gorge. Once ruled by the Romans and Moorish, Ronda has the most historic feel of any city I've been to. I actually walked in ruins that were built in the 300s! In Ronda we visted the Plaza de Toros, the oldest bull fighting ring in Spain, and baños árabes, or Arab baths. ... read more

Five years ago, a family journeyed from England to a hovel in Ronda in Andalucia in the south of Spain for Christmas. There they battled condensation, mould, a gas system constantly threatening the risks of an explosion and/or a cold water blast for anyone in the shower, temperatures low enough for indoor conversations to be conducted in a mist of steaming breath, and an oven seemingly operating on candle power, in order to celebrate the festive season. The venue was my sister C's house. It took me half a decade to summon up the necessary psychological strength to return again. There were several reasons drawing me back, ranging from helping C with some DIY tasks, to practising a smidgin of Spanish in advance of my trip to South America, to simply feeling a visit to my ... read more

I’m glad we got up early and managed to beat the hoards of fellow day trippers to Ronda. Obviously an incredibly popular place to visit and it’s not hard to see why. Ronda was everything I expected to see in Andalusia. The closer we got to Ronda, the more attractive the landscape became. The ranges of Serrania de Ronda were a welcome relief after miles and miles of sterile olive groves stretching as far as the eye could see. Ronda is a small town with an amazing location. It’s sits right on the edge of a 100m gorge called El Tajo. The gorge separates the two parts of the town and is spanned by three ancient bridges, the most impressive being a 17th century bridge called Puente Nuevo. The old Muslim town had all the twisty ... read more

We had read that the train trip to Ronda was gorgeous, but it was more convenient for us to catch the bus from the main bus terminus in Seville. It was a very pleasant and easy journey and we got a cursory glimpse of the beautiful yet harsh country that is Andalucía. At times it reminded us of the dusty brown and pale green Australian landscapes and I think I even spotted a few eucalypt type trees, but the similarity ends there. The little villages built into the hillsides, the bountiful olive groves, and the goats and donkeys roaming the farms leave you in no doubt that you are in southern Spain. Ronda is one of Andalucía’s famous pueblos blancos (white villages) and probably one of the most incredible looking places I have ever been to. ... read more

Que pasa amigos?? Well I have started another week here in Malaga and it has been crazy today with placement tests and interviews....muy dificil, pero está bien! This weekend was a ton of fun. We took a day trip to Ronda, (where exactly it is I am not entirely sure in relation to Malaga) and honestly, when we first got there I was kind of like hmmm, what are we here for? It just didn't look like anything more than a little Spanish town. However, my question was soon answered when we were taken to this point so that we could see that Ronda is entirely situated on this gorge-- it is pretty amazing! We saw the view out from all sides of the city and it was awesome. Besides las vistas bonitas, we got to ... read more

I thought I should take Jane somewhere romantic for our honeymoon after the Thailand toilet situation. Ronda seemed like to perfect place. After all, Ernest Hemingway lived there and he had four wives...one is enough for me! Ronda really is a spectacular place, and when we arrived the sun was shining which made it all the more beautiful and was a welcome change from the cold, wet Granada. It really is a tourist town, most visitors come up on day trips from the coast. But after all the tours head home, it is a beautiful place to wander around and just soak up the atmosphere. Ronda is perched on top of a cliff about 750 metres above see level and the old town is linked to the centre by three bridges. The newest bridge Puente ... read more

Spain is an incredible place, but not for any reason you'd expect. It's not the rolling hills of olive trees or the tiny villages nestled in the mountains that amaze me. Rather, I'm awed by the pleasure I find in doing the many mundane tasks that Spaniards do everyday without thinking. I adore hanging out the laundry, especially when I've just done a load with a lot of underwear. I know it sounds crazy, but before we moved here I acquired about 20 pairs of undies in vivid colors (orange, hot pink, lime green, turquoise...) and I can't think of anything more exquisitely beautiful than brightly-colored, freshly-laundered undies dangling in the sunlight of our patio de ojos. Aside from domestic chores, buying groceries has taken on a whole new appeal. I try not to plan too ... read more
