This weekend, I went to Portugal with a bunch of people from the program through Discover Granada. We got on a bus at six in the morning on Friday and drove to Sevilla, where we picked up the rest of the people going. The program was led by five or six guys a little older than all of us, so it wasn’t going to be a very strict weekend. Portugal was basically one big party. Well, for most of the people. I only went out the first night for the kickoff dance party. They had a sangria sailboat ride with unlimited sangria one day, but I chose to just stay on the beach and not get drunk. The weather was perfect every single day. The weather forecast said Friday and Saturday would be rainy, but it ended up just raining at night. The days were perfectly sunny. We got to Lagos at two on Friday, checked into our hotel, and hit the beach. Our hotel was only a few steps away from the water. The beach was beautiful, surrounded by cliffs.
That night for dinner, we went to Na Na Bah, which has the best burger in the world. The
burger was huge, but I think I’ve had better. I don’t think anyone can beat the burgers in the US. I was rooming with Lyanne and Cat, and we woke up early to get our free breakfast at the hotel then went back to sleep until noon. Most people went on the sangria sailboat, but the three of us and one other guy just wanted to go to the beach. We were bused to another beach and the marina. This beach didn’t have cliffs, and was more of what I was used to for beaches. The beach by the hotel didn’t have nice, soft sand, but this one did. We spent the day at this beach, then headed back at five.
They took us to Cabo Sao Vicente that night to the End of the World to see the sunset. This is the westernmost point of Portugal. This was really cool, but it was very windy and cold. We got dinner in town again, and I went back to my room to go to bed early while everyone else partied. The next day we did breakfast again and went back to sleep. We had to check out of our
room by noon, then we could go to the beach again. Luckily, they had showers by the pool that we could use before we left for the seven hour bus ride home, because I was feeling pretty gross with five hours worth of sweat and sunscreen. I ended up not actually getting in the ocean because the water was absolutely freezing. I couldn’t even keep my feet in it for longer than a minute. I ended up leaving the beach a couple hours early because I had had enough sun for the weekend. I showered and then sat in some shade to read my book until it was time to leave.
We ended up getting home at 2:30 Monday morning, so that was painful, but at least I didn’t have class until 6:30 that night so I could sleep in. I only have two more weeks of class, then finals, and then my family comes to Spain! I can’t wait to be done with my classes and studying, but I’m not quite ready to leave Spain yet.
