Granada and Ronda

By local bus we travelled to Granada for a getaway of 3 days and two nights. Granada is overlooked by the magnificent Alhambra, a 12th century walled city built by the moors and occupied by the ruling sultans and their retinue until their conquest by King Ferdinand and Queen Isabella in 1492..obviously a big year for Spain. Ronda is regarded as the home of the bullfighting tradition in Spain. The Ronda arena was built in the 1700s.

Like so many other Spanish cities Ronda endured a succession of invaders despite its impressive natural cliff top location and walls.

This mural celebrates the travellers who came to entertain the locals and brighten up their lives. It also gives a good overview of the ‘old town.’

Not sure what this interesting thing was used for but everything else on the walls looked genuine.

From our room. We were torn between enjoying the view and getting out to see Ronda.

From our visit to Granada we learned to identify Moorish arches like this one and the distinctive ‘patio’ with its water feature, in a residence dating back to the 14th century. It houses a museum that traces the history of the Ronda area from the Stone Age to the Christian conquest of the Moors.

Exploring Andalucia
