Yesterday we finally made our first real trip to the beach here in Càdiz. It was so helpful to get our little group together and go spend some time relaxing by the ocean. We all really needed it. These first few days we are all in such strange situations and getting used to our families, new routines and new ways of daily living. I believe I said this yesterday, but our families are very caring and kind, but strict about how things are run in the home. Water and electricity are much more expensive here than they are in the states. One short shower per day is all that is permitted because their won't be enough hot water, and (similar to the US) the lights are always turned off unless we absolutely need them. This morning I went for a second muffin...a bit of a mistake 😊 They try to save as much as they can, so, one muffin a morning. Got it. Probably better for me anyway!
Oddly enough we saw part of the API group staying in Seville at our beach here in Càdiz They are already being adventurous and taking trips! Its about an hour and a
half train ride from Seville to here, so they came down for the day to enjoy the beach as well! The beach we were at is La Caleta. It is considered the "local" beach here. There is a much longer beach, La Playa Victoria, that spans roughly 4 miles and is more touristy but I hear the sand is whiter and its there aren't boats and stuff around.
We took the rest of our group to watch the sunset because most of them hadn't seen it yet. Again, it was beautiful and they're weren't as many clouds this time.
We decided to go out like Spaniards last night which was very new for me. Alex, you would be so proud. We didn't leave the house until 11:30 and by 1:30 I was pooped so Natalie (who is battling a cold of sorts) and I headed home and I fell straight asleep. Hayley, who is a cross country runner from Pacific University, and I planned to meet up this morning at 8 to go for a run. A phone call at 3am informed me that that probably wouldn't happen...good call Hayley 😊 haha! I don't think that schedule is
something I will get used to, but you never know. When you don't eat until 9:30 you get a little burst of energy that keeps you up longer than I like to stay up!
My mission that last few days has been find notebooks, find sunglasses, find almonds! All three=difficult! We found a papeleria (paper store) but it has been closed every time we go. The real trick has been the almonds/trail mix. There are countless numbers of heladerias (ice cream stores) and candy stores. They really like gummy candies because that's like all I can find. They don't really snack here, so my eating a little bit every few hours is proving difficult because I really don't want to eat my family's food since they don't keep much around so I need to buy myself so little things to tide me over. Luckily there is a fruteria (a fruit store) on my way to school so that should help.
Eating here is very different. Lots of carbs not a lot of protein. Just before I left for Spain my family and I went out to eat and my mom said, "you should get some red meat before
Whitney enjoying the waves.
Whitney has lived in Cadiz for a year in high school. She feels a very strong connection here and is incredibly comfortable. you leave cause you probably won't get it!" I got scallops. I should have gotten steak. I miss MEAT!!
Lesson you all can learn: If you want to send me a package (which of course I very much welcome) send some trail mix and some peanut butter! They are rarities here!!
