Hi everyone!
Sorry we have not blogged for a week, but we have had a massive week, and just when we thought we could have a rest day, along came the next exciting day and huge week!
We have been catching up with family quite a lot this week and really clocking up the km's on our car! Then Sunday we began our adventure to Venice! Seriously, who would have thought that getting to Venice from Ljubljana would have been so difficult! They are in neighbouring countries! Anyway, dont have time to get into details today, just a brief description of our week!
Caught up with Anja and had dinner with her! Phot attached. Caught up with Teta Gretica and Teta Marija, and Marjan and his wife and also Boyan and his partner. We all had lunch together in Maribor. WE saw Stric Mario and Stric Branko in Trieste upon our return from Venice. Had a beautisul coffee with them in Venice and got shown around Trieste and notable point of interst was the hospital that Pop was in!!
A big hello from all family and friends in Slovenia and Italy!!
We went to visit Nana
Ivankas village and looked around a little. Could not find a cemetry, which would have given us some info, but nonetheless cute little village. WE went past the disappearing lake! Very intriguing! We also visited the Sneznik Castle on the hill which was beautiful and I fulfilled my dream of being a tour guide! I translated the Slovenian version into English for an Israeli family! I could get a job here!
Alex will tell you about Venice!......
Venice was a big, busy place! We had to walk to our hotel from the train station. The only way to get around in Venice is either walking or by taxi boat. We visited St Mark's Square or Paizza San Marco, and saw the huge bell tower, the Doge's Palace and St Mark's Catherdral. We went to the top of the Bell Tower and looked out all around Venice. Then the bells started ringing and it was very loud! The bells are really huge! We took a taxi boat to Murano Island where they have glass blowing factories. We had a tour of one of the factories and saw a man make a large glass bowl and a glass horse. It was
hot in there! And it was amazing to see how they make the glass turn into many different things, like jewellery, bowls, vases, lights, plates, cups, and many other things too. This was my favourite part of Venice. We also did a tour of the Grand Canal which was interesting to see the buildings built on water. Some buildings are starting to lean.
Back to the land of green, quieter cities, better pizzas, and slightly better drivers!
Wednesday we thought we could have a rest day and we sort of did! Opa came to Ljubljana with Stane and spent the day walking around and Opa caught up with an old friend from 50 years ago. And then off to the soccer! Great new Stadium and gee the Slovenia's go off like a frog in a sock at the soccer! Really wonderful atmosphere! Pity the Aussies didnt score, so many chances, but anyway great night. Of course we stuck out in our Aussie tops, flying Slovenian flags! People were shocked to hear us speaking Slovenian, but wearing Aussie tops! There are many Aussies working here with no Slovenia ties here at all! We met several on the bus to
the game!
Yesterday we went rafting with Peter and Nejc, down the Kolpa River which borders the Croatia and Slovenia! We stuck to the Slovenia side of the river because we didn't have our passports with us! Ha! Ha! Brilliant fun! Kids had a ball. A few little waterfalls to go down, so there was a little whitewater rafting, but mild for the kids, especially Sienna! Alex and Mia spent the afternoon swimmin in the river at every opportunity for "Time-out"!!
