From Kazan we're follow the Volga River south to Samara. Well it used to be the river now its the Kuybyshev Reservoir, the largest reservoir in Europe and 3rd largest in the world by surface area. And it really is big, it takes us the whole day to ride its length, mind we did stop off at a few places on route. We're riding through green, rolling hills. The roads are great – good quality and hardly any traffic, certainly none of the queues of trucks we had entering Kazan. It is really enjoyable riding. We call in at Ulyanovsk, originally called Simbirsk, in 1924 it was renamed in honour of Vladimir Ilyich Ulyanov. He was born here in 1870 and is better known to the world as Lenin. Having visited the house where Stalin was ... read more

Russia really is a land of contrasts. A few weeks ago we were inside temples in the Buddhist Republic of Kalmykia, a few days ago we couldn't move for onion domed churches in Suzdal and now here we are in the Republic of Tatarstan, home to 5 million Tatars, where mosques are more common than churches and signs are in Tatar and Russian. The capital, Kazan, is a great place to wander round – it doesn't feel Russian, it has a very free and easy feel, more relaxed than other cities. There are some amazing buildings around, very flamboyant and colourful not at all grey and concrete like my image of Russia. And so much history - established around 700AD by Bulgar Tatars (of Turkic & Slavic origin), it was conquered by the Mongol Golden Horde, ... read more

From Moscow we're heading towards Kazakhstan straight through one of the most densely inhabited parts of Russia so its a constant battle with the local traffic – there's a lots of it and they certainly don't use the same rule book as we do! Some of our Australian co-riders are getting quite upset about it! Progress is slow, there's lots of roadworks and long stops for long trains including the Trans-Siberian Express (nice memories of previous trips). En-route we stop off in the Golden Ring towns of Vladimir & Suzdal. This is where Russia began – where the Vikings settled, created fortified cites and set off to capture lands as far south as Kiev. The land of Principalities & Grand Duchies with buildings to match - UNESCO listed monuments are scattered everywhere. Vladimir was once the ... read more

Hlavnim zazitkem jsou ovsem zlate natrene lampy, ... read more

FLIGHTS: Movie selections were pretty good so the first flight YVR TO Montreal went fairly quickly. No food except what we’d brought or wanted to buy onboard. Beautiful sunrise – firey red fuschia streaks with clouds accented in gold. The land below was still in darkness and I could see the city lights as we flew over Brussels. Connections were made on time and baggage arrived in good shape. I even managed to get 2 thirty min. naps during the last 22 hours and that was after a 1 ½ sleep the night before leaving. In St. Petersburg The ship- Viking Surkov – is comfortable and clean with very friendly staff. We spent the rest of the day checking out the ship, orientation talk, dinner and then did a pre-bed walk on the waterfront. Bed at ... read more

They call it Instanbul of the Wolga – the capital of the Republic of Tatarstan – where Muslim and Christians, Tatar and Russian meet. During the Soviet times Kazan was the capital of the Tatar Autonomous Republic and enjoyed also after the breakup of the Soviet Union certain sovereignty from Moscow. Micha picked me up from the train station at 6.20 am – unfortunately the 20min ride to his place was the only time I saw him during the coming 3 days. Consequently, the deep dive into the Tatar culture which I was hoping for didn’t happen. Micha had another CS staying over – Felix, a German guy hitchhiking his way to Siberia – he tried to convince me to come along with him for a while... yeah, not really :) However, Felix and I gave ... read more

On Sunday we went to the деревня the village – it does have a name, but hardly ever anyone refers to the actual name of where the family’s summer house is situated – it’s just the village. They have quite a large house, an according to them small garden and a баня – apart from the size all quite typical. So – what do you do out in nowhere? You start cooking :) Preparing and eating food is definitely an integral part of the Russian culture after two weeks I’ve already heard countless times “пойдем кушать!’’ – Let’s go eat!. After ‘lunch’ I sat in the garden and started writing my Moscow blog entry – fell asleep on the “качели’’ – ‘garden swing?’. After waking up I helped with some stuff in the garden before we ... read more

After a night spent in the train – without any special events probably due to the average age of the passengers in my ‘wagon’ – I was looking forward to a shower in Olga’s apartment. In her apartment this meant, putting water to boil, pour the hot water into a big pot, mix it with cold water from the tap, take a hug cup and off you go pouring the water over your body. In summer in Russia the government usually turns off the hot water for about two weeks by district or street in order to fix the pipes . I told Olga not to worry – the first time I went to Russia/St.Petersburg I stayed two weeks with a host family – guess which two weeks the hot water was turned off in their ... read more

My firm initial intention was to write no single word about the two trips to the mount of Iremel. However, thinking it over and having browsed through the photos, I came to the justified solution that it is unfair to omit these trips because, notwithstanding the fact of Rather Bad weather during them both, the experiences are worth sharing. I did not like to write about the trip only due to the reason that the weather was not quite excellent and I (we) did not see any panoramas. I like panoramas very much, specifically when on a mountain top. Given no panorama, I’m dissatisfied. Mount Iremel is about 1650 m high and is located in the Urals. It takes only four hours from Ufa to Station Vyazovaya by train. There are plenty of trains in that ... read more

I visited Kazan many times and had many walks there. I usually go to St. Petersburg via Kazan by train. I like this city, because I feel comfortable there. I mean, in the centre, I haven’t been in other areas. My first visit there was in May 2009, when I was going to Kursk, and on my way I had two stops in Kazan and Moscow. It was extremely fine to start walking at 6 o’clock in the morning, with almost no people in the streets and lovely atmosphere, the sun was shining and the sky was blue. I did not use any transport for moving in the city, because the train station is in the centre and major attractions are also there. But I did go by metro one time and by bus, only because ... read more
