I'm actually writing this after just crossing the border into Belarus, a process that so far has taken 4 hours, so I'll hopefully add more when reaching Moscow! Arriving at Cologne station our train (EN447) appeared on the departure board with the right number and time, but Moscow was not listed as a destination. It turns out only one carriage goes to Moscow and after Warsaw this one carriage is connected up with other carriages from all over Europe to form the train to Moscow! Boarding was a simple procedure using a combination of basic German, English and pointing - something that served us well for the rest of the journey. After making our beds the rest of the journey passed pretty uneventfully until the Poland-Belarus border. On the Polish side of the border Schengen immigration ... read more

I just returned from an extraordinarily inspiring and intense stay in Moscow. I went there for the European Conference on Positive Psychology. I left on Monday morning and flew into one of the international airports in Moscow, Vnukuvo. Arrival there was very pleasant. The airport is pretty new, getting through passport control was not a big deal (although obtaining the visa had been, but I think the Russians are just returning the hassle that we give them when they want to travel into one of the EU states), and I caught the airport express train, with which it took 35 minutes to get to the Kievskaya station in town. When I got there, I was glad that I had taken a year of Russian at school and that I could still remember the Cyrillic writing because ... read more

After pulling off the near miracle and arriving into Moscow last night, I made my way over to the hotel to meet up with Jenn and my colleagues, Sergey and Tatiana for dinner. Sergey is well versed in my affinity for Georgian food, so he chose a traditional Georgian spot nearby. Sadly, we don’t have any Georgian restaurants in Houston (to my knowledge). Of all the former Soviet republic cuisines that I’ve tried, this is my favorite. We had a feast of red beans (lobio), chicken in walnut sauce (satsivi), grilled meats (shashlyk), cheese bread (khachapuri), salads and desserts that I can't rememer the name of. Many people are familiar that Georgia is well-renowned for their high quality red wine. You can easily find it good liquor stores... read more

We enter Moscow from the south but our hotel is north of the city. Any sensible person would just go round one of the ring roads but Edwin declares that we are going straight through the centre so he can get a picture of the bike in front of St Basil's Cathedral. Turns out to be a good choice. We know precisely where we are aiming for and, somehow or other, we end up riding directly there – the large cobbled square round the back of St Basils. The traffic police don't seem too bothered when we park the bike and leap off to take photos, and the bus drivers cutting through the alleyway are tooting and waving. From here we ride past all the buildings we spent time walking round a few years ago – ... read more

My Moscow trip was just a stopover on my way from the U.S. to Thailand. It should be noted first that most travelers visit Moscow in tandem with St. Petersburg, the latter of which is (from everyone I've talked to) unanimously the preferred city to visit. Moscow is sprawling, with no central area of affordable restaurants and pubs, and its sheer size can make it difficult to navigate. The imperial capital / the old Leningrad (St. Petersburg) is an 8-hour slow night train or 4-hour fast train and apparently, you should spend more time there than in Moscow. Also, before booking any tickets, be sure to look up visa requirements for Russia. If you're American, it's an extremely expensive and cumbersome process. I recommend using travelvisapro.com. I arrived at the airport at 7:30 AM, and after ... read more

Volgograd isn't all about the Battle of Stalingrad, there are some fairly spectacular feats of engineering here too. South of town is the start of the Volga-Don Ship Canal fronted by a giant, 23m, Stalinesque arch and the largest Lenin statue in the world. Its part of the Volga-Baltic Waterway that allows shipping to travel from the Baltic Sea to the Black Sea and hence the Atlantic Ocean or Suez Canal. We keep thinking of Gulags as being connected with the end of trip & Siberia but this canal was predominantly built by prisoners from corrective labour camps, in 1952 over 100,000 convicts worked on the project. From the Volga ships are lifted 88m through 9 locks then lowered 44m through 4 locks down to the Don. The first lock is surrounded by parkland full of ... read more

Due to much popular demand, this entry will not only feature a picture of puppy, but also some photos of unattractive men on the train without their shirts on! Totally safe for work though, just maybe not safe for your delicate constitutions. And also just lots more photos generally! Especially of Lenin! You are all in for such a treat! Our second to last train trip took us from Perm to Moscow. Due to the number of mines around Perm, we were in a super fancy train, that even let you use the bathroom any time at all, even when you were at the station. It was crazy! It still contained shirtless men however, and I have put the photo of this spectacle in the photos down the bottom. About 24 hours after departure we rolled ... read more

June 11, entering Moscow I woke up this morning to a cement wall outside my stateroom window. After my shower the wall was still there and it wasn't until after my Qi Gong class that the ship began to move. I later found out that we were delayed by fog and had been stuck in a lock for over two hours. This of course moved our tour of Moscow back to 3pm but the sun was out, it was a delightful day (even with the occasional mosquito bites,) and we enjoyed watching Russian families vacationing along the Moscow Canal. Some people were camping, some were fishing along the river with long poles, others were boating, and as we got closer to Moscow we found sailboat racing, yachts, hot air balloons, yacht clubs and elaborate dachas. It ... read more
