Well another day another experience.
Camp started out normal but I guess because week one wet so well, life decided to test me a bit. First, we get about 5 more kids. Then, I find out two of them have mental problems/disabilities, one of the kids isn't anywhwere close to as old as the others and the last two think they know everything. Oye. So I managed that and for a good 90 minutes I was the only one looking after 30 kids (two of which needed some extra attention) and the rest of which still aren't excellent at English. Normally this is when I would go into full-on panic mode but my flight or fight kicked in and I survived, and the best part is, so did the kids. We played some more games. As per my friend's request I taught the kids steel the bacon (Thanks S.M.) and they also made friendship bracelets and beaded stuff. I say stuff because I really don't think you could call it anything specific. In terms of the day's learning, we went over animal flash cards in English and Romanian which was fun. Also, I showed small groups at a time how to
play go fish, crazy 8's and memory. The kids really took a liking to the card games especially the boys.
After camp Ioana and I grabbed a qucik bite (of which I'm eating now for breakfast) and then met up with her cusin for some shopping! The food we ate is like a cornmeal in milk. I tried it with cheese first and literally felt myself adding pounds so I went for the less used alternative of milk. It's really great in milk and I'm working with the cantina ladies to get some recipes together so I can make some of this food at home.
The girls and I went into the center of town and did some damage. They have a bunch of second hand stores but to me they're alot like Marshalls or Ross. It's not really used clothes but more of clothes that just didn't sell. We also had a snack at a local cafe spot (the name wasn't as cool as Coffice). I had a slice of cake called the ambassador. None of the girls knew why it got that name but it was absolutly deeelish! It kind of tasted like chocolate/marzipan on the bottom and
caramel frappachino on top. So very tasty!
Ioana had a train to catch so her and her cusin went off to the station. I decided to hunt for some things because I hadn't found any sort of souveneer stores, or even post cards. Thats when the real adventure began.
I cruised the center a bit and found some small things but nothing that really stood out. I figured oh well, maybe Ioana can show me someplace later on. I hopped the bus I thought went to the school but it turned out, as fate would have it, I ended up at the huge indoor mall (Polus Center). The Gods must have been happy with how I handled the children and decided to reward me with what they knew would put a big ol' smile on my face. Yay for Karma points. I decided to have a little look and before I knew it was dark outside. I thought it might be a good time to head home.
Thinking again that I had the right bus, I hopped on one and let it take me to the train station apparently. I decided to actually look at the numbers on the sign and realized none of those buses would bring me back to the school. So, I walked. I walked down the street, past the communications center, over the hill and through the woods. Finally winding up a block or two away from the Center of town I had been in before. Mind you, Ioana and her Cusin had driven to the train station from town, So it's at least a mile or 2, without getting lost. I finally found a place I recgonized and just sat and waited for whatever bus I absolutely knew would take me home. I finally got one and 2 hours after my trip nack to the school began, I was safe (and winded) in my bed. Needless to say I'm pretty sure I don't need to worry much about those 10 extra pounds.
Onward and upward as today (Tuesday) some kids from the prison fellowship will be joining us. They themselevs aren't exactly trouble, but they come from households where one or both of the parents are in prison. Initially, they had grouped the kids together and so they never met any kids whose families were a bit less troublesome. Ioana was explaining the program to me and we decided we should invite them to camp to hang out with kids from better situations. So, that's my challenge of the day. It should be pretty gosh darn interesting.
Va Iubesc.
