The story goes as follows: Early one night, at 4:30am, a door across from the Rising Cock Hostel opens and a backpack comes flying out, crashing to a halt square in the middle of the narrow street. There's a bit of a ruckus inside (no, I can't describe this ruckus), 30 seconds pass and an Aussie stumbles out, only to have the door slammed behind him moments later. Disheartened and dejected, the evicted backpacker slowly gathers his gear, takes one last look at the flat, and pleads to no one in particular, "I've GOTTA get out of this loopy town." Welcome to LAGOS, Portugal. Fittingly, my own whacky trek through Lagos begins with a chance encounter to end all chance encounters. On a never-ending bus ride from Sevilla, we get to the end of the line ... read more

Next stop on our farewell to Europe tour was a nice, relaxing holiday on the Algarve. Being half-Portuguese and having my dad there certainly helped us discover all the local gems. We basically spent the week being fattened up. The food was amazing, especially the sardines! I managed to eat 18 large sardines in one sitting, much to the delight of the owners/chefs. Sy (my dad) was the perfect host: arranging for us to have a great 1-bedroom apartment in the Praia da Rocha then stocking up the fridge with lots of Portuguese cuisine to eat, despite keeping us so busy we hardly had time to eat there! His itinerary included taking in most of the towns in the area: Portimao, Albufeira, Vilamoura, Quarteira. A highlight was the amazing rock formations at Praia do Vau, where ... read more

Well, I did have to consume some of the local product. As they same, when in Rome..... Anyway, Porto rocks! Again, the architecture was beautiful and Porto had the extra advantage of being on the river Douro and therefore was even more picturesque than either Lisbon or Sintra. I had a short cruise along the river, called the 5 bridges tour for obvious reasons, and later tasted some good and not so good ports at 3 cellar doors. For some reason they seem to be big fans of chilled white port. Sweet or dry, neither is to my liking. The tawny and ruby ports, however, were worth the wait. I also did a tour at Taylor’s cellar door which was interesting. The vineyards are well up the river, Porto is simply the storage facility so it ... read more

Well, I loved Sintra . It is a great little town about 28 km from Lisbon. After arriving in Lisbon in the early morning of May 13, I immediately took a train to Sintra and, thanks to the train conductor, I found some great accommodation adjacent to the train station . In the end, I stayed four nights so will happily act as Australia’s ambassador for Sintra having seen all of it! I walked through the hills up to the Moorish Castle and then to a bizarre eclectic castle known as Pena Palace. So many different styles and mostly should just be described as over the top. Also climbed the highest peak in Sintra, Alta Cruz, at 529m. Not really a warm up for Mt Kilimanjaro! I took a bus trip to Cabo de Roca, the ... read more

April 12th, 2006 Day 97 of our cruise of 105 Madeira, Portugal We disembarked at 8:15, before the shuttle bus run, so we walked the 1 ½ mile to town. First, we visited the Mercado and saw fresh fish arriving, beautiful flowers spread out for viewing and all types of crafts from Madeira for sale. We then rode the cable car to the top of the volcanic mountain to the chuch of Santa Maria del Monte. To get partly down we used an antique wicker toboggan ride manned by two men wearing straw hats, it was a lot of fun. We then walked to Blandy’s Madeira wines in town for a great tasting: 2glasses of 3year old( dry and sweet), 2-5 year old( semi-sweet and rich) then again the 3 year old which we preferred in ... read more

1) Portugal is definetly and defiantly not Spain. Before I arrived, I too would have been hard pressed to distinguish between Portugal and its larger Iberian cousin. Portugal does however, retain an immediate and distinct atmosphere of its own, although this atmosphere is hard to define. I suppose it seems somewhat Carribean or South American to me, although having never been to the Carribean or South America I'm not exactly an authority on the matter. But it is certainly multicultural and seems much more exotic than other european countries 2) Until I recieve conclusive evidence to the contrary I will continue to believe that all portugese people can sing very well. I mean really sing. One evening in Lisbon a group of people from my hostel and myself went to watch some Fado music. Fado ... read more

Today would unfortunately be my last on the island. I had a 5:00 P.M. flight back to Lisbon so, I had to have the bike back by about 3:00 P.M. I took another route from Seixal across the highlands to the center of the island. The going was a bit chilly at the higher elevation but not enough to deter my progress. Approaching Funchal, I made a quick detour to the inland town of Curral das Freiras. What a great decision that turned out to be. The town lies in the middle of a dramatic valley that resembles Yosemite. Valley walls rise up in all directions to dizzying heigths. Unfortunatley, team orson’s ever-whining team photographer had allowed his camera’s memory to run out! So…no pictures from Curral das Freiras. I made my way back to Funchal ... read more

After a refreshing night’s sleep, I decided to make my way around the west coast of the island. By mid-morning, the ocean mist had burned away and I had clear blue skies. Porto Moniz lies in the Nortwest corner of the island. They have some neat salt water bathing pools amidst the crashing waves. Purdy cool. From Porto Moniz, the road climbs straight up. Before long, it seems as if I had been teleported directly to Northern California. The road cut a path through a grove of eucalyptus trees looking for all the world like the section of the Pacific Coast Highway just north of Bolinas. Of all the places I’ve ridden, this section came the closest to matching the PCH for twistyness and beauty. Unfortunately, it only lasted for a few kilometers. The entire stretch ... read more
