Day 6 - August 29, 2016 – Golega, Portugal to Tomar, Portugal – 19.54 Miles My wakeup call this morning was provided by the wonderful sound of roosters crowing. As I opened my door to check on the weather, I was greeted by a very beautiful sunrise. After bidding farewell to the beautiful horses we made our way out the gate and past the outdoor horse arena to the trail for the start of another long hot day of walking.
The trail has us headed due east with the sun in our eyes as we wind through the streets of Golega bringing us to an asphalt road where we eventually make a turn onto an old dirt farm road passing by several fields of olive trees and grape vines. It’s not long before we once again are back on the asphalt road which takes us past corn fields with irrigations systems in place and then past a beautiful farm house and buildings.
Continuing on we finally arrive at a tree covered road which was not only beautiful but also provided us with great cover from the very hot sun. It’s not long before we
pass by an old building covered with ivory that we think might have been some type of Templar house but not sure. We soon come to an old bridge which after crossing we spy a fig tree where Harlan picks us a fig to enjoy that was very tasty. Once we have eaten our fig, we continue on past another pepper field which we did not stop and pick any to have with our lunch (later on in the day we were wishing we had picked a pepper to eat as they have been totally awesome).
We finally enter the small town of Atalaia where we pass by an interesting old well, a neat fountain and a very well preserved 16
th century Parish church (Igreja Matriz Monumento Nacional). After leaving Atalaia the terrain changes as we leave the flat alluvial plains and head into more interesting countryside of gentle rolling hills (not really that gentle). The first thing we encounter is this steep downhill and then an even steeper uphill. Definitely a change from the previous days of walking as we now get to use different muscles. After all the hills, it’s not long before we feel
we have earned a break from walking. We stop by the side of the road where we find some shade alongside a stone wall. Love the picture of Harlan sitting there with his hand on his chin thinking -- please no more hills – I’ve had enough for one day.
We continue downhill into Asseiceira where we pass by solar panels, a vegetable/fruit stand before turning back onto a dirt path. Our focus now is on finding the next café where we can stop and have something cold to drink as it’s been a very hot day. It’s not long before we find Café O Ze where we remove our heavy backpacks and enjoy a nice cold drink.
Having quenched our thirst and cooled off some from the excessive heat we begin walking the last few miles into Tomar where we will enjoy a couple of much needed rest days – not only for the back but also for the very tired feet that have developed some unwanted blisters!
