We drove east along the Algarve and were not impressed with the area leading to Faro which is very heavily developed, so much so that we were unable to find the sea!

Once past Faro, which is the administrative capital of the area, the coast becomes much quieter and flatter with marshes and sand islands a little way out to sea. At Pedras d’el Rei we were able to cross to one of the islands, Iiha de Tavira, via a causeway and bridge and then continue to a seemingly endless beach on a rickety old train. The whole thing was a very unusual experience.

We then continued to the attractive town of Tavira and onward to stay at Villa Nova de Cacela, where Geoff and Sue Griffiths, who we met earlier in the trip, have made their home.
