Day 2! We were all a bit tired and jet lagged and slept in a bit. I woke up at 9am and went to a local coffee roaster Torra Roaster, owned by a Brazilian (who said everyone grows up drinking coffee, with family in the Industry and they ship out the good stuff leaving them Arabica). I got an Americano for Anne and I, very good coffee but wanted more, and Anne thought it was a bit strong. Anne and kids rolled out of bed and we all showered and got ready for another day. Cameron slept in the longest asking us what the rush was!
The plan was to head downtown and start with Sao Jorge Castle, so we stocked up on water and found passes and jumped on a tram. A nice man who had lived in Portugal for years helped us out and told us where to get off and where to go. We decided to take another bus up the hill to save our legs and it was a good idea, especially in the 30 degree heat. The roads to the too were pretty narrow and twisty and i was impressed a buss could navigate them.
We toured around the castle grounds with nice views of the city, saw some peacocks, and walked back down, stopping along the way at vista points (Miradour Santa Luzia ) Jumped on another bus and went to see the Elevador da Santa Justa? Happened to find the secret elevator in a small shop across the street and skip any lines, thanks Youtube, and went up to the rooftop and tower lookout. The main elevator seemed closed for maintenance so ut was a good thing. We explored the small streets of the old village around the elevator and stumbled in a silk screening shop and the owner was super friendy and gave us a tour. They were selling old prints for 25 - 50 euros.
We were getting tired and hungry so started looking for a spot to sit and eat. Came across a restaurant, which was a bit of a tourist trap but had pasta that both kids loved. Anne had octopus and it was pretty good I had the grilled cod and it was ok. Soaked in oil with average potatoes and salty hard cod.
We were a bit worried about being overcharged because of Google reviews we read
after ordering but it worked out.
Jumped on another bus and went uptown to Park Eduardo VII that is known as a good spot to see the sunset on the city. When we got there it was a long walk up a hill somof course we rented scooters, thank God! Turns out the sun sets behind the view but it was still nice to see the city and water. Took a bus back home and grabbed some groceries for the next day- snagged a really good bottle of port wine for 3.50! That will churozo and cheese was a nice snack.
So far groceries and meals havent been too bad for Camerons allergies. We've been using google Lens to translate packages and asking staff and using an allergy card. Hope it stays that way.
Lemons…the lemons here are the size of your hand!
Cameron’s new past time : jumping over post after post on the streets!
