Glyn and I didn't get up until gone 11am as we'd purposely not set alarms, wanting to catch up on sleep. We then drove to the end of the world. The End. ........ Not really! But during Ye Very Olde Times, people thought that Cabo de Sao Vicente was the end of the world as it's the most South West part of Portugal. The guide book promised all sorts of wildlife including sea-otters, eagles, kestrels, heron and white storks, so all we saw was a few fat seagulls and one lonely sparrow. When we got there we thought it must be cold as people were dressed in big coats and scarves around their faces. These people clearly have never been to England as it was pretty warmish and sunny. We went to the lighthouse which has ... read more

This morning was another beautiful day, big surprise! We headed off to the southwestern most point of Portugal to a town called Sagres. This town is famous for its Fortress (called Forteleza de Sagres) built in the 15th century. We walked around the interior perimeter of the fortress (at least 2km around the edges of the cliffs) with endless lookouts both to the south and the west. Luckily for me, they were safely fenced off and I felt relatively comfortable. The cliffs were unbelievable - about 150 feet high. There were local people (actual people) perched on the edges of these cliffs around the fortress fishing with super long poles. It was absolutely terrifying just watching them. I can't imagine if one were to actually get a fish on the line and them not falling in! ... read more

The Algarve is Portugal's most popular holiday destination due to the clean beaches (approximately 200 km of them), the cool, unpolluted water, and the facts that it is relatively cheap, very safe and overall welcoming. English is spoken at most resorts. The Algarve is rich in culture and diversity. If you are looking for fast paced resorts or a calm tranquil setting either is attainable. The entire region is approx.5400sq km and is graced with over 100 different beaches, each unique in its own way. If you are into nature the choices are many from the Ria Formosa to Monchique mountain, from Caldeirão mountains to Sagres cape, in fact there are over 30 hiking trails (as per official Turismo de Portugal guide books). If you are a golf lover then you have come to the right ... read more

Monday 6th December to Sunday 12th December 2010. Monday 6th December 2010 Sagres. Our beautiful girl Megan is celebrating her 21st birthday today. We are in a campsite in Sagres, south west corner of Portugal. The weather is warm and the wind is from the south and the ocean is stirred up. There are sea cliffs - only 100 metres high. 4pm went and bought a bottle of cheap red wine and Gaye was off to to use wi-fi and publish the travel blog. Tom went for a short bicycle ride and came home and cooked up a soup for dinner – really good tonight. We have decided to print out our travel diary so we can read it to refresh our memories – where we have been and what have seen and done. We are ... read more

The West coast of Portugal - Tui to Sagres – 12 November to 22 November Well, after spending the evening in the first Irish bar of the trip in Tui, I find myself in a place called Ingrina. I’d never heard of either of these places prior to the trip, and whilst I’d return to one, Tui can keep it’s bottled Guinness to itself. From Tui it has been down to Porto, then Coimbra, Batalha, Tomar, Pego, Milfontes, Carrapeteira, and finally Sagres. Porto is the 2nd largest city in Portugal so navigating it was a bit of a nightmare, glad I came across it on the Sunday rather than the Saturday as the town would have been even busier. The ‘old town’ is very nice, not amazing but nice, but oddly within a street or two ... read more
