Journey to the land’s end! Perched on high cliffs Cabo de Sao Vincente (or Cape St. Vincent) is the furthest southwest point of Europe that points out into the ocean at the bottom of Portugal. But the first stop was Sagres (pronounced Saw-gresh). Sagres is slightly east but further south of Cape St.Vincent and also perched on top of towering cliffs. Boldly guarding the cliffs is Sagres Fortress which was built in the 1400’s to protect against any potential invaders from north Africa. It’s quite a hike all the way around the promontory but well worth the walk. There were fishermen pitting their luck against the sea and the 200 feet high cliffs but as we watched one fisherman won the lottery. After much winding of line he pulled up a nice silver fish - dinner ... read more

We had to pack up early and be out of the airbnb at 10am this morning since the ladies that run this one own 20 of them and they do all the cleaning themselves. They had even sent us a message earlier asking if we were flying out that morning, probably hoping to get in as early as possible to start cleaning. Anyways, we got out on time and since our Lisbon checkin was at 3pm we went to Lagos to see the town. We parked the car in an old part of the city and stumbled onto a surf shop where we bought some cool souvenirs of our surf experience. We got some good tips of where to go from the lady at the cultural center so we did some visiting and shopping, getting souvenirs ... read more

Thursday morning, we awoke to a deluge! Not just a little rain, but wind and pouring enormous amounts of cold water, putting a damper on our plans to visit Cape Sagres and the site of the end of the world. As an aside, every Portuguese citizen that we have spoken to has remarked at how much they needed the rain and how dry everything has been. California friends, does this sound familiar? To this, we say, you're welcome! After another great breakfast, we said goodbye to the lovely Danielle, then promptly stole our room key. Waiting for an easement in the rain, we hustled to our car by way of the steep outside marble steps. Let's just say that our B&B in not exactly OSHA approved. No problem. Off we went to Cape Sagres with hope ... read more

On Tuesday, we took a day trip to the very old city of Silves, about an hour from here. We took the local bus into Lagos, and then a train to Silves. It was an 30 minute from the train station to the town, but most of the walk was along a very quiet road. "The peaceful ambiance of the town today does not reflect the historical importance of Silves, which during the North African Moor’s rule of the Algarve (700-1200 ad) was the capital and defensive stronghold of the entire region. Remnants of this illustrious era can be discovered throughout Silves, and include the huge red brick castle, the impregnable city walls and defensive gates." The town, located on a river, was the site of a flourishing Neolithic culture, followed by the Romans, Muslims, and ... read more

We always try to leave as much flexibility in our travel plans as possible, just in case places are different once seen "in person"...and on this trip, we're glad we did! We made a change in Lisboa already, turning Evora into a day trip rather than an overnight.. We then decided on our last night in Lisboa to scratch the side trip to Salamanca, Spain. It was just too much travel time and was too expensive for a short trip. We also hadn't found a place to stay that we liked in Coimbra, so decided to make that city a day trip from Porto later in the month. Once we made those decisions, it was easy to have the rest of trip fall into place!. We decide to stay longer in the south and then go ... read more

12th April Awoke to a beautiful & colourful sunrise. After a leisurely breakfast we jumped on the bikes & off we went to CSV in mid morning heat. Only took 20 minutes. We arrived at the site which is clearly a tourist attraction as there were a couple of coaches, 8 motorhomes & a couple of dozen cars. This place, now fielding a lighthouse, used to be a monastery & is on a pilgrim’s trail; you can tell by the fact that there’s a hotdog stall on the car park. The views were spectacular & the cliffs a good 300’ from sea level. We walked around then went to the end of another promontory where some local chap was setting up his fishing rod atop the cliff! What made me laugh wasn’t that so much but ... read more

11th April Breakfast, washing then wifi time. I went to see the lady on reception about the police, no joy & we have to ring the police station where the prosecution will be launched. No doubt on the day, we’ll ring & no-one will have a scooby doo why we’re ringing. I hoping that come the day the campsite will let us use their phone & one of them can speak English & help translate. Then David arrived & he drove us into Lagos. He has a small IQ... as in Toyota IQ, a super little car. Parked up & had a leisurely wander through the town & went for a coffee outside a restaurant overlooking the bay & 6km of sandy beach. Overall, we summarised our lives since we last saw each other whilst David ... read more

10th April A cloudy start, packed up & left for the south west. We diverted to get supplies & the road brought us back on track through forests of eucalyptus & cork oak. We came out of the hills into orange groves & there was obviously blossom about as the perfume was smashing. In this part of the world there are plenty of motorhomers but I think most camp wild as they aren’t in the sites much. As we approached the site there were plenty of walkers & camping cyclists & some hitchhikers. Once again the site is in pine woods, very rustic but nice all the same. I later went to reception & asked the lady, who was born in Germany (don’t) & multilingual, if she would help find out with the police exactly what ... read more

History is everywhere in Portugal. The casual tourist would never suspect that desolate, forbidding Cape St Vincent, Europe’s most south-westerly point of land, was the site of two of the most significant events in modern history. What happened there six centuries ago led to the discovery of the world as we know it today. Before then only the bravest of sailors dared to venture beyond the “Pillars of Hercules” (Strait of Gibraltar), and none was foolhardy enough to sail past the rugged cliffs which marked the end of the known world. All that changed in the 1400s: the world was opened up to discovery, exploration and settlement; and Portugal and other countries went on to acquire overseas empires and great wealth. All this was due mainly to the foresight and determination of one man – Portugal’s ... read more

WOW what a day. We saw some incredible sights today. Some of the best scenery of the Algarve area. We made a loop and went up into the mountains then over to the west coast then back along the south coast. A long day covering over 160 kilometers. The highlights f the day: 1. The walled city of Silves--the wall dates back to the 9th century 2. Monchique--the highest point in the Algarve region of Portugal. You can see hundreds of miles up the west coast and also along the south coast. One of the best vistas we have seen. This vista rivals the Rock of Gibraltar. 3. Sagres - the most southwestern tip of Europe, once called the end of the earth. There are two main capes here. The first one is Cabo de St. ... read more
