Day 2 Shangahi
This being typed up on the train to Olsztyn but I shall roll the clock back!
Arrived in Shanghai on time at 7am to 27 degrees and “mist”..nice word for smog I think. Breezed thru customs okay and dropped bags into left luggage(90Yuan) and headed for city on Maglev. Cool train ride although it didn’t reach the promised 400kph plus..only got to 301kph. The noise when the other train meets it halfway is awesome!
TRANSFERRED AT Longyang to metro line 2 and nailed the metro ticketing..it has an English button and touchscreen to select station etc. It was rsuhhour but it wasn’t as packed as say London. I WAS ABOUT THE ONLY NON Asian person on it it seemed and this trend ensued for most of the day on the train..lots of smiles and stares!
Got off at Ninjang rd shops and walhed west to Peoples Square. Very hot..temp increased during day by about 7 degrees. Very hazy all day and got worse later in the
day to the point that photos taken at Bund will show not very many buildings.
Went to Shanghai museum and had quick look at expo type stuff..not the history museum tho. Main shopping street is department and junk stores intermingled..u get accosted everywhere for junk and beggars. U get used to saying no and they don’t really hassle past the first 15 secs.
Range of buildings is stunning..there are some great shaped skyscrapers mixed with then odd old building . Noise is everywhere...as are bicycles and scooters driven at alarming rate through walking street and at cross roads..no thought of helmets or life and limb.
There is definitely a feel about the place but once u have walked the main street and looked at a few shops its same old. I grabbed a coffee and caught my breathe about 12, having had a bun and cake at 11.30. As it turned out that was last meal to 7pm..didnt plan that at all well and ran out of gas big time.
Waled over to Bund, cityside and looked across the traffic laden river for half an hour at buildings. Quite cool really. Took some tourists photos and brushed off beggars etc. Then went to old shopping arcades around Yuyu gardens and got lost looking for train station. Some of the streets traversed were a bit scary but interesting.
Got out to airport about 7pm so as to get baggage from left luggage..big argument as I was charged another 5 yuan as first person had undercharged me in the morning. # of them convinced me I had to pay..$1NZD so not worth the high blood pressure. True to form Lufthansa hot me for $100 USD for excess baggage on bike despite being 6kg under on bag. She tried to hit me for $60 NZD per 9kgs but I said no. left on time..Lufthansa is terrible compared to airnz.
