What a surprise was in store at Gdańsk. I knew something of Gdańsk and its history as the former Danzig. My impression had been of a heavily industrialized and port city. Academy of Fine Arts

Wielka Zbrojownia (Akademia Sztuk Pięknych) - Great Armory (Academy of Fine Arts). Designed by Antoni van Obbergen and built in 1602-1605. In the niche is statue of Minerva. Adaptive reuse as the Academy of Fine Arts in 1954. Targ Węglowy 6. "In the neighbouring Kohlen-Markt is the Old Arsenal, a curious-looking edifice erected in 1602-5, in the Flemish Renaissance style, with gables and towers; the main façade abuts on the picturesque Jopengasse".--Baedeker 1910 DSC_0058
