The Old Town Warsaw
Warsaw. Em. Rowie. Barb. Teddy. 29/9/06 WARSAW - POLAND 28/9/06-29/9/06.
Back into the EU again and not without some bureaucracy. Seemingly our easy passage through into Russia had caught with us heading out over the Byelorussian/Polish boarder. I’m beginning to suspect that the crew’s job may not be all fun and games after all.
But we made it and ventured into Poland.
This end of the trip has been very bitter-sweet knowing that the end draws closer & the further you travel west, it’s hard not to regret the fact that we were heading towards Warsaw which was our last port of call before leaving everyone once we got back to Berlin. (I apologise in advance if I start to sound like a sentimental mess)
I should say something about Minsk whilst I’m here. It again is one of those places that featured quite heavily in my history lessions, but I’m sorry to say didn’t really fill me with awe. It’s just another town, and the most memorable part of Minsk was that we had one of our crazy, loud, giggly, girly, dinners with the fabulous four, Heidi, Bootylicious, Rabbit, and later the crew, that I’m going to miss so much.
Poland
is a pretty, rural flat country. The autumn colours are now out if full swing and my favorite would have to be the crimson that flames through and outshines the other shades of yellow, orange and light greens.
Warsaw, and is it going to sound crazy that we were looking forward to staying in cabins of four again. We really were!!!
The karaoke was rocking from our cabin and us all being professional singers, I’m betting the power ballads were sounding great!
Sadly our last cook tent meal, and our wonderful cook, shes going to kill me when I say this, but……. how sweet is she !!! She made us all our favorites from the trip!! Now that’s love for you!
Feeling very full, sharing a cabin with my favorite girls. Once again does life get any better than this!
Its hard to be in a place like Warsaw and not think about all that’s happened on the streets that you are now walking down. I was expecting that feeling of remorse and sorrow to be so ingrained that it would be hard to appreciate the city in itself. But it’s almost the opposite.
Jewish Memorial
In the area of what was the jewish ghetto. Warsaw Poland 29/9/06 The centre of Warsaw like so may of the cities has the quaint, cobbled Old Town at its heart. And whilst it’s more recent history is still obvious, this part of town makes you remember that the city has much more to offer than its WWII history. I could have spent longer in Warsaw and it’s definitely on my list of “place go back to”.
I was still conscious of the WWII history. Walking around in the area of what was the Jewish Ghetto, you can help but feel some of the weight of that time. The museum in the old town runs a great short film, in English at midday that gave me a much more rounded view of the time of WWII in Warsaw including the resistance movement and the degree of devastation that occurred.
The town also has a little museum dedicated to Marie Curie so for all you science nerds out there it’s interesting and worth a look. They have the title page from her original thesis hanging in little frame on the wall!
From there I began what I thought would be a leisurely stroll down to the Chopin monument only
The Bowling Team
Warsaw Poland. Ben.Me.Em.Rowie.Kosta.Barb. 29/9/06 to discover that it was a hell of a long way away. But it was worth it in the end as the statue is at the end of a park that is dotted with grand old trees, pebbled paths and one fantastic red rose garden in full bloom. Yes I definitely made time to stop and smell the roses, having one of those “I wouldn’t want be anywhere else in the world at this particular moment” moments. Happy Days.
To top of a great day the Top Deck Ten Pin Bowling Championship began, once we got back to camp and sufficiently scared the other Top Deck Group with our cabin disco of dancing and singing. We were pulling out the big guns which included “Girls just want to have fun” “its’ raining men” of course and what night would be complete with some of the Dirty Dancing Soundtrack.
For all those guys out there some free advice. Since I’ve actually discovered that there are people alive today that haven’t seen Dirty Dancing. (Can you believe it!) GO AND SEE IT. Women will make much more sense once you have.
So to the bowling. Our Team of Heidi,
The Night Out
Dani..Candi . Brochure Shot! Bootylicious, Rabbit, Ron Burgandy and Dover, were up for the challenge of kicking ass. I was doing great until I started to sober up midway though the game. Proudly you’ll be happy to know I was able to stay on my feet despite those stupid shoes and I think my score of 70-something wasn’t too bad!
The party kicked on at the beer tent next door where the girl-power part of our crew, were doing us proud!!! And may I say that other group had nothing on us. Our cook proved she’s a woman of many talents and succeeded in crushing more that a few egos. A particularly fine moment was her completely ignoring the advances of one dickhead, who was trying to steel the limelight on the stage by flashing, his less than flashable, miserable, excuse for a six pack... You go girl! From all of the other girls in the bar that were proud to be included in your “Pack of B*****S” Thanks.
Now our little tour leader. Stirling effort! with some great photographic results! Who knew a pair of ripped jeans could be so entertaining?
And Boys (one in particular). Surley you've learnt by
now that girls talk! and as appealing as your offer may be, offering it to more than one girl may not have been your wisest move. Just a tip for the future 😊
With that Fam and Friends......
I leave you all with this little pearler to prove to those, who may be doubting that the hair colour is genuine. Nodding off to sleep at sometime after 3am that night, it finally hit me why the guy on our bowling team picked the name “Dover”. His first name was Ben.
Don’t worry if you don’t get it…. it took me 5 hours.
Love Shelle
