South and central Norway has a distinctive series of mediaeval stave churches. They have this name because there main structural items are timber columns or staves and there walls are constructed of vertical planks often covered in shingles. Many have very complicated roofs. On our travels today we visited two of them. The first was right outside our campsite at Roldal and the second at Heddal about about 100k west of Oslo.
The road for our journey to Oslo fist took us onto the high Hardangervidda, Europe’s largest mountain plateau and then through a series of pine covered mountains and valleys which had a rather alpine feel.
We stayed at an excellent camper stop which was part of one of the city’s marinas and only a short train ride to the centre.
