A day in the big Norwegian mountains climbing passes between fiords and dodging the Trolls.
We started by looking at Trollvegan, at 1,100 m, the highest overhanging wall in Europe which was only first climbed in 1967,
Next it was over the Trollstigen (Trolls Ladder), an audacious road which zigs zags up a very steep face all the time avoiding the tumultuous 180m high Stigfossen falls. From the summit it was a long gentle descent to Eidsdal on the Norddalsfiord which we crossed by ferry. Then it was over another mountain road, the Ornevegen which gave superb views of the Geirangerfiord, one of the most beautiful in Norway, before descending another set of hairpins to the village of Geiranger. Altogether 90k of exciting driving.
We finished a memorable day with an excellent buffet dinner in Geiranger’s Hotel Union before retiring to our campsite which overlooks the fiord.
