After a night of high winds and rain battering the van, the morning dawned fair and we retraced our steps 200k south to Alta. There we visited the largest collection of prehistoric rock carvings in Europe, a remarkable feature. There are several hundred of them including men and women, elk, reindeer, fish, boats and other unidentified objects. They were produced between 6,200 and 2,000 years ago and could have some spiritual significance.
We moved on south and stayed on a beautiful rural campsite on the shores of Straumfjordden, just north of the town of Sorkjosen. As the evening wore on the sun dipped behind the mountains then reappeared to shine down the length of the fiord at midnight. A memorable site.
