The Nightmare in Rotterdam parties were the first Dutch parties I'd ever heard about when I started listening to hardcore music. The first DVD I purchased was "Nightmare In Rotterdam - Welcome to Wonderland" in 2005 when I was 16 hehe. After this I quickly got my hands on the Nightmate Outdoor for 2005 as well because I couldn't believe that they actually held parties outdoors. It seemed way too good to be true so I decided that I would have to see it for myself.
That was the start of what eventually brought me to The Netherlands sitting at Amsterdam station wondering why on earth someone would leave an almost full bottle of Jack Daniels under one of the seats. Smic and me were waiting for the train that would begin our journey taking over 2 hours to the venue De Luttenberger in Hellendorn for "Nightmare Outdoor - The Last Daylight". This venue is in a really remote area, a clearing in the woods of a natural park. Nightmare Outdoor were providing 6 areas this year and due to its location, there were no sound restrictions...which is always good.
They hadn't opened the gates yet so being squished
in between the big group of gigantic German and Dutch people pretty much traumatised me haha...just joking but I'm just so short, they must find the sight of me a bit funny. Anyways, we decided to just have a look around at first. The location was great especially because we'd never experienced anything like it before. The concept of getting some fresh air out in the woods and being able to look up at the sky as you enjoy your favourite music seemed like a great idea to me. Unfortunately, we weren't able to stay until night fell because of public transport but I think the atmosphere of the venue would've been so scary and fitting at night 😊
Of course, we pretty much went straight to the industrial area and someone started walking alongside Smic. Of course (because I'm nosy) I walked over to see what they were saying and then I screamed because I realised it was Ruffneck (quite embarrassing don't you think?). Anyways, I was really really sooooo happy that he recognised us and we had a bit of a chat. He also introduced us to Dennis who is Weapon X so within the first hour
we were both pretty excited already.
Well, the first act we actually saw was the first Enzyme act on the mainstage Ruffneck vs. Weapon X :P. Impressive as expected and Ruffneck is a show off haha! I got a good workout dancing for most of their set and Smic was googling at the Nightmare girls dancing on stage. The stage was set up with tombstones saying stuff like "Will B. Back" and "Hellbound" and these weird skeleton thingys. It was cool but I felt like I had seen much more extravagant set ups on previous Nightmare DVD's.
We spent a lot of the day walking around checking out bits and pieces of lots of sets...amongst those sets were Ophidian (who is starting to act like Ruffneck on stage lol), Neophyte vs. Tha Playah, Panic, Forze DJ Team, Dune, Moleculez LIVE, Mental Wreckage, Mindustries and out of curiousity, Passenger of Shit. I use the word curiousity because neither of us is into terror at all but they are actually quite an entertaining act and I guess it was something different. They are Australian which is funny.
Most sets were impressive, Dune was crap - he was not mixing
tracks at all. Ruffneck, Weapon X and Ophidian were the highlights and also our time spent in the industrial area. I don't mean to sound like a party pooper but the industrial area was sooo amazingly loud, that I had to keep walking out to get away from the sound...I guess that what happens when you have no sound restrictions lol. We ended up sitting on a tree trunk just outside so we could listen. We spent a lot of time doing that actually and just talking about stuff.
The Nightmare girls were reallly cute, especially when they wore the Freddy Kruger outfits. Oh, how could I forget that we met Freddy wandering through the woods...he is super nice and didn't murder us!
At some point in the day it started to rain and they handed out these awesome orange ponchos, we got heaps in case it rains at Defqon or Dominator haha. Smic didn't like wearing his but I didn't want to take mine off. Towards the evening, we decided to head home because we wanted to avoid the rushes to catch the last trains home. We did one last lap of every single arena. The main
area was absolutely packed at this point and very sweaty feeling being inside a giant tent and all. The happy hardcore tent was the funnest one to visit as they were giving out lollipops and black balloons which Smic and me had balloon fights with for a while hehe.
So we got home safe and sound and were both mega excited to be going to sleep at a respectable time instead of looking like something the cat dragged in at 8am. Nightmare Outdoor was a mad day out for both of us and yet another goal we could cross off the list.
