Well this is it people the last blog from an awesome trip to europe. Even though I'm home already I figured I should still finish it, mainly because the last week in holland was awesome fun (as usual.) After the marathon train ride back to Nijmegen Melissa cooked up a feed while we got out stuff organised, then we went out for drinks with two of Melissa's mates Hans and Maria. Everyone was pretty knackered so after a kebab on the way home we hit the sack ready for an early morning train to Harderwijk where Melissa's parents have a holiday house. So regulation we were late to leave and didn't get to Harderwijk till a bit late but we went into town to try the local specialties of smoked eel and raw herring with raw ... read more

The Vierdaagse festival is a week and a bit long street party in Nijmegen, in celebration of the 4 day walking event held at the same time. All throughout town there are about 20-25 stages set up where they play all sorts of music from midday till midnight. After 12 everyone heads to the bars and the party generally kicks on till at least 5am. Reece and I were there from the Saturday night (first night) until Wednesday, Steve also met us in Nijmegen on Monday, right in time for Melissa’s birthday. The 4 nights partying were a lot of fun, although we were usually up a bit late to experience the best of the afternoon music we tried to get into town for the last act or two in the evenings. We went to a ... read more

The Nijmegan International Four Day March (also known as Vierdaagse) is the worlds largest marching event. When I got asked if I wanted to go to Nijmegan in Holland for a week with work and I wouldn't actually have to do any work all I would need is spending money I thought what’s the catch "We take part in a four day march to improve relations but we spend eight days out there in total so it's a nice break" I got told, I walk a lot anyway, how hard could it be......VERY HARD! 200km over four days, that’s 50km (around 32 miles) A DAY for four days! In the previous years that people had entered the march there were always a few that dropped out/were pulled out due to injury, nine of us went to ... read more

Millengen on the Rhein = Dreumal, 79.3kms, Total 2344.2, Ride time 4'40" Happy Birthday to Christie, Happy Birthday to Christie ..." What a place for a touring cyclist to wake up. The Netherlands, where the cycle tracks are made of gold, the roads are flat, motorists are considerate and the cycle route second to none in the world. Yea, right. My early morning attempt at singing "Happy Birthday to you" was broken off abruptly with Christie announcing she was going for a run, so instead I broke camp and got us ready to go while she went for a run to cheer herself up. The day oscillated after that, there were no cycleways paved in gold, in fact there were no signs at all as far as we could see. Then as soon as we ... read more

Duisberg = Millengen on the Rhein (Netherlands), 97.40kms, Total 2264.8kms, Ride time Unknown I suspected that the day wasn't going to start so well when I asked the lady at reception to confirm that to get to the Orsoy Ferry, I should just go out along the Industrial Park, turn right and then follow highway 8. No she said, I should go left. She then went and got an english speaking cyclist who worked there to explain the way for me, "It's simple, go out here, go left at the road, at the second lights, go left, go under the highway, through a tunel, and you'll get to a T Junction, go left, you'll come to another T Junctoin, go right, then left ..." seriously he went on like this for another 2 minutes whilst ... read more

This entry is more of an update to the last one, because we're still here. The main differences between today and the last piece go something like this. Lindo was offered another gig, making it 3 on the trot, on Saturday night. It snowed. Then the sun came out. We went on a road trip to Zeeland and saw the zee. The gig was at a little rockabilly festival that happens every year here. Apparently a German band had been booked but while driving to Nijmegan they broke down at Frankfurt, and cancelled. Now this is a story I find a little hard to believe. If this band was comprised of Germans, which I have no reason to doubt, then how on earth could they have broken down? Their vechile would have been in perfect working ... read more

Excuse me while I dismount from my bike, put my bunch of tulips down and remove my clogs. Ooh, they're a bit sticky after falling into the canal though! Almost sounds like we couldn't leave Ghent. It was hard, but our love of putting ourselves in difficult situations won us over again and we set off down the cobbled streets with our matching bags in tow, our matching side satchels hanging jauntily across our rumps, and our matching tourist unease about what tram or train to get on clearly visible to all. I should mention that I did find an incredibly ugly building whilst out walking in one of the newer areas, as we all know you cant stop progress! It's Thursday, and we have to get to Antwerpen because an old acquaintance of Lindo has ... read more

After another great sleep, I spent much of my last day in Nijmegen walking around the city centre. It was a big market day again. Lots of locals were out shopping and sampling the in-season herring. I tried herring once the other day...once was enough! I videoed a lot of the city for my opa to see if he remembers any of it from his days here when I get back. In the evening, Gerard and Marya invited me over with Jaap and Els for dinner. Marya had cooked up another delicious feast. My last home-cooked dinner for a long while I'm sure! After dinner, Gerard brought out some photos he'd found of me and my family from last time we were here (exactly 20 years ago - 'Juni 87' was written on the back ... read more

After the best sleep I've had since leaving home in a nice big double bed, Jaap and Els took me to visit a nearby WWII Museum. I don't know much about war history, but more and more on this trip I'm enjoying learning about the history of places I'm visiting. To start out I joined a guide. He was giving the tour in Dutch so that idea didn't last too long! I ended up making my own way round the museum. Luckily all the display information was in English too. I didn't even consider it might only be in Dutch, since everyone in Amsterdam spoke English. It was really interesting reading the war history of Nimegen especially. It gave me an idea of what my grandparents lived through back in the 1940's. ... read more

I caught the train down to Nijmegen today. It's about an hour and a half train ride from Amsterdam. This is The Netherland's oldest city and is where my mum's parents (my oma and opa), and my mum were all born. A lot of my relatives have passed away here, but Els and Gerard, 2 of my opa's brother's children still live here and I met them last time I was here, 20 years ago. Obviously I don't remember too much, including what people look like, so waiting to meet Els at the train station had a bit of a blind date type feel to it. This quickly vanished when I saw Els. She had one of the biggest and happiest smiles I've ever seen, and almost instantly she and Jaap, made me feel right ... read more
