Arriving at the border post at 8pm meant no traffic so we entered Croatia quickly and were soon back on the road to Dubrovnik which was only about an hour away, on arrival we headed to the guest house which was by the way very difficult to find, to find the place quiet with nobody there. So with some frustration we went looking for somewhere with wifi, but with new years eve upon us everything outside of the old town was closed except for the odd hotel so after what seemed hours we went there to see if they had rooms which they didn't but at least we could use their wifi over a beer or two. We looked on a hotel booking site or two but couldn't find anything close so we ended up staying in the village of Bosanka, the first place we visited ended up having no rooms but the couple there fed us and plied with raki which was very hospitable before calling someone they knew who had a guest house nearby. We then debated going into the Dubrovnik for the new years celebration but after such a long day we decided two to one not to
The lads suffered from the cold last night but I was fine we loaded into the car first thing in the morning and headed back to Dubrovnik stopping briefly to take photographs from the cliff face above the town before making our way to a parking area close to the St James Tower entrance to the city and began meandering around the empty streets in the early morning. Wandering up towards the Minceta Tower we discovered a guy sleeping on a basketball court in a little one man tent before heading down one of the many alleyways onto Prijeko street before heading towards the Church of Sveti Nikola before turning right into the Stradum the city's main thoroughfare where I extracted some cash from an ATM before turning and heading west towards the Pile Gate before we found an open restaurant for a very expensive breakfast.
After eating we continued on towards the Monastery and Franciscan Church stopping to look at the Fountain Onofrijeva before exiting through the Pile Gate and crossing the stone bridge and heading down through the garden to the beach near the Tower Bokar. Reentering the old city we wandered the streets randomly
heading down towards the Old Harbour visiting the Propore before finding a way up onto the walls near the Tower Sveti Ivan and walked almost all the way around in the wrong direction to avoid the exorbitant fee to go up on the walls. From the walls there were great views over the sea and islands but also of the inner city and its monuments, I found it more interesting peering into peoples yards and lives. Some of the buildings were in surprisingly poor shape which surprised me as the city is Unesco listed, eventually we ran into a checkpoint and had to turn around and descend near St Francis Tower but we were able to walk about 80 percent of the way round for free.
We then popped into a nice little Irish pub for lunch and a few drinks hooking into there wifi to try and find somewhere to stay, this time we tried to book a place within the walls and wandered off through the backstreets in search of the place we booked which we found but couldn't get in, eventually a lady turned up and told us the place wasn't available but she had a
place just outside the walls. We followed her back on to Stradum and down through the eastern part of the city exiting near the Tower Revelin entering a building near Lazareti with a lovely view of the Old Harbour from our window.
After settling in we decided to go back to another pub we had spotted earlier in the day, the place had a great feel and we enjoyed the small intimate locale for several hours before heading out into the rain around 10pm and making our way back to our room. In the morning we visited the bakery next door then loaded the car and headed north an hour or so through the mountains to border with Republika Srpska one of the entities that make up Bosnia Herzegovina, the border official was kind enough to tell us how sexy the Bosnian women were, which was kind of amusing.
