Niisiis. Kolmas päev on käes ja me alles alustame kirjutamist. Ja Krisil hakkab raamatus viimane peatükk. See selleks. Lahkusime kodumaa pinnalt 14.juuni, lennuk väljus vist 17.10. Easyjet viis meid Berliini Schoenefeldi lennujaama. Hakkasime rongile minema, kui selgus, et tüüp, kelle juures ööbima pidime ei olnudki Berliinis sel päeval. Ta oli aru saanud, et saabume pühapäeval. No okei, midagi polnud teha.

Malta is made up of three islands, we stayed on the main island, Malta in the suburb of Sliema. It was overlooking a harbour and one of the delights of the area was the promanade that stretched for about 5km through two other suburbs. This was our first trip abroad and I'd played it safe by picking a type of package holiday where English was the main language. So we get to Gatwick Airport to be confronted by lines of Brit families and pensioners (what did I expect) all heading to Malta. When we arrive in Malta, Vickie (our tour rep from Thomas Cook) is there to meet us. To cut a long story short I thought I had landed a role in Benidom, it was just like on TV. Our hotel (The Plaza) was tired, ... read more

First stop on the cruise is the island nation of Malta. It’s a tiny brown speck on the map located between Sicily and north Africa. The island had a lot of British flavor to it, but the culture is a melting pot of Arabic, Greek, Italian, British, Spanish - and no doubt others. Apparently none of these cultures or conquerors brought traffic signs with them. We did not see a stop sign or a traffic light, and were later told that the island had none. None. No stop signs, no traffic lights. Driving (and therefore crossing the street) was an absolute free for all. We’re working on uploading pics to the blog, but Internet access on the ship is pay-per-minute, so we’ll have to wait until we’re on terra firma again before we can post pics. ... read more

May 20, 21, 2008 RAGUSA, Sicily / MALTA Today was a short drive from Taormina to Ragusa in the very south of Sicily. This is another very nice drive through some beautiful scenery through the mountains valleys and lots and lots of seascapes from the high freeway. This is an interesting grain farming area with vineyards and fruit growing areas. In Ragusa there is not a lot to do but we took a walk to visit a local botanical garden and of course another large “Duomo” church. Wednesday morning we got an early start to catch the ferry to Malta from Pozzallo. This was a very comfortable 90 min. ferry trip on a new, fast, catamaran. B.C. Ferries could learn a lot from these guys. Malta is pretty small so we organized a day excursion through ... read more

Malta Arrived in the Port of Valletta early on Friday, May 16th and it was great seeing a European town again! We did a Highlights Tour in the morning which took us first to the fishing village of Marsaxlokk. It was a nice photo opt and probably won't be available in the near future because fishing in the Med has really gotten bad. Most fishermen only do it part time and need another job for support. The next two stops were a porcelain factory and a glass bowing works and both were interesting. The best stop was the Meridiana Wine Estate where we got to taste some very good wines and replenish our South African supply which had just ran out. After the tour, we asked to be dropped in the town of Valletta and got ... read more

Day 9 Malta - Valetta & Mdina Our excursion today took us to look at the ancient (quiet) city of Mdina and then we returned to look around the modern capital of Malta, Valetta. Paid for a sumptuous meal in the "Pinacle Grill" - very nice.... read more

Day 8 At Sea Slept in late. Relaxed. Listened to several presentations from different speakers ranging from the executive chef talking while a bloke made fancy carvings into fruit and vegies. Arrived late and played in a trivia competition. Most of the questions related to USA history - sports people and actors etc. Attended an art auction and, wait for it we bought two paintings. That’s right we bought after the auction, but saw the two during the auction. Got dressed up for dinner in our glad rags and ate snails and lobster. Lost money at the casino’s roulette wheel. Terrible satellite internet connection so We're unable to upload photos. Will post a collection from Rome. ... read more

Upon leaving Greece we went to another historical place, the Republic of Malta. It seems that at one time or another every country in Europe had a piece of Malta. The Phoenicians, Romans, Carthaginians, Ottomans, Arabs, Spanish, French and British all ruled this small, strategic outpost in the Mediterranean at some point. It is said that Malta has the oldest freestanding building in the world. It is a megalithic temple in the town of Gozo. The Maltese language is Semitic in origin but greatly influenced by the Romance languages and written in a type of Latin alphabet. Now English is taking over, especially among the younger, computer literate people. In the port of Valleta we tried to negotiate with some taxi drivers for a short tour around this fortressed island. But again being back in the ... read more

Hi all- Just finished up dinner and saw a computer in the back of the restaurant so we thought we should check in. We spent the day up at the Blue Lagoon, a sheltered inlet at the north of Malta that has crystal blue waters and tiny private sand beaches. The trip over was a bit crazy as we had to take a ferry to the lagoon and the waves in the sea were 2-3 meters (4-9 feet for all you Americans!). We escaped sea sickness and enjoyed the sun, wind, and salt air while reading books and being annoyed by a group of 8 young spanish girls who thought they would sing their high school cheer song over and over again. Yesterday we headed to the south of the island to check out a local ... read more
