More Mercedes Benz or Porches than you'll ever see in your lifetime. Welcome to Albania! I knew so little about this region before cycling through this amazing country just 5 days ago, where loyalty and integrity amongst the men rules above all else. I have cycled on the motorway, handled a loaded gun given to me by a student in an internet cafe and witnessed unscrupulous amounts of money being flaunted as the latest luxury cars drive through the streets of the capital Tirana. But before I carry on let me wind back just a couple of weeks to when I left the beautiful city of Sarajevo.... Just 20 km south of the Bosnian Capital, whilst stopping to take a photograph, I was asked to join Rafik and his Muslim family for a coffee. I had ... read more

The Former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia is now fortunately known simply as Macedonia. After achieving independence from Yugoslavia in the 1990s, Macedonia was forced to adopt the lengthy moniker in order to avoid tensions with Greece. I only visited Lake Ohrid which many say is the highlight of Macedonia. Hard to disagree as it is beautiful. I am currently in Shkodra, Albania and heading to Budva, Montenegro via Ulcinj tomorrow morning. Albania has been a pleasant surprise. $US ≈ 48MKD (Macedonian dinars) but accommodation and much transport can be paid for with euros Accommodation and food After arriving from Istanbul on a 16 hour bus ride I was not up for a long search for a place to crash. By chance I met a very nice Albanian political organizer who took me around to an ATM ... read more

Resumo: Opção b. Tive um dia maravilhoso. Estou bem. Hora de ir embora. Sair da Albania para a Macedonia. Opção a) taxi 5euros + ônibus 2euros OU b) caminhar+van 0.4euros+caminhar+cruzar fronteira a pé+caronas? Como ninguém aparentemente falava inglês eu disse: “Me, Tushemist, border, Macedonia, walk”. Me senti uma debiloide falando. Rs. A moça do lado parecia ter entendido, falou com o motorista e depois desceu da Van: “mirupafshim” (bye). ... read more

We decided to catch a flight from Belgrade to Ohrid to both save time and border problems between Serbia and Kosovo. What I didn’t realise was that the plane was so small it had propellers, this may sound ridiculous but I am terrified of flying and the smaller the plane is, the more it moves around in the air and the more my irrational fear shows its pretty face. The flight ended up ok…I only left Mikaela with minor bruising on her legs. Lake Ohrid it turns out has an airport so small it does not have an ATM so our first problem was that we couldn’t get any money out for a taxi. The second problem was that in our laziness of travel lately we decided not to write any directions down in the local ... read more

Macedonia - 1 Week Macedonia is a small but very mountainous country with pleasant people and nice scenery. Macedonia is famous for Alexander the Great and poppies apparently but I saw no poppies and Alex has some statues and an airport named after him....wicked (as Ali G would say). Personally I would say that Macedonia is like a massive farm and should be famous for vegetables or farming, farming and tractors as there were tractors everywhere. There were churches and mosques with more mosques closer to the border with Albania, it was nice to see two religions co-existing. Orhid was a nice touristy destination located on a scenic lake and I decided to get a hotel room partly due to my desire to shower, have a beer and also because I couldn't resist a room ... read more

Macedonië 1 juni t/m 8 juni 2012. vrijdag 1 juni 2012.

Geo: 40.928, 20.7793Though great, Ohrid town can be a bit overwhelming - the beaches are tiny, but people definitely take full advantage of every square inch of space available, with sun loungers side by side, and the odd beach towel wedged in between. There's a vibrant atmosphere on the beaches, but today presented the perfect opportunity to escape the crowds for the day, taking advantage of a lake cruise to explore Sveti Naum, where there would still be crowds, albeit slightly smaller ones. Sveti Naum is named after its monastery, originally constructed in 900 AD, which was later replaced in the 16th century. It's a very characteristic look for the region, with a monastery overlooking the brilliant body of water below. Its beaches also packed, you can find a private beach on the opposite side of ... read more

Geo: 41.12, 20.82Ohrid - considered the jewel of Macedonia, it's said that if you haven't been to Ohrid, you haven't been to Macedonia. In ancient times, its name meant "City of Light", a fitting name, as in present day, the biggest draw is its pristine lake offering stunning vistas and cool, crystal-clear waters that are a perfect respite from this mad Macedonian heat. But Ohrid holds much more than that, with history, museums, nightlife, and a surprisingly modern and cosmopolitan pedestrian zone, not quite what I had expected from this ancient city. However, if Ohrid town isn't enough to captivate your attention, there are several other equally-picturesque beaches along the lake that are also worth visiting. Or perhaps a hike up Mt. Galicica, from where you can simultaneously view both Lake Ohrid and nearby Lake Prespa? ... read more

Geo: 41.011, 21.3422Yesterday's delays getting into Bitola meant that there would be no time to check out either Pelister National Park, or the mountain hamlet of Dihovo. Though Bitola isn't a big tourist destination for foreigners, staying around for the day was definitely tempting after arriving yesterday evening, and seeing the cool cafe culture in Bitola's pedestrian zone, Sirok Sokak. I don't think there was a single Bitolan at home last night, and they were all either sitting at a cafe, or strutting their stuff, dressed to kill.Though Bitola is a little bit cooler than the Tikves region, I still wanted to get an early start on the day before things started roasting - even at 10 AM, temperatures were starting to climb into the high 20s, so the sooner the better to take the long ... read more

Geo: 41.04, 21.34"How's your wifey?" Huh? Is he talking to me? "How's your wifey?" He must be, no one else is in the hotel's breakfast room. But who the hell is my wifey? Oh, wait ... how's my wi-fi!!! Pretty good!So began the conversation with Gary, a tourist from Sweden, but not the typical tourist, as I would soon learn while he conversed fluently in Macedonian with the waitress. Though he hasn't lived here in decades, he still comes back yearly for vacations with his son, and was curious as to why I was traveling through Macedonia. Not overly popular with foreign tourists, and probably not popular at all with others of my yellow-Asian-ass ilk, it was a legitimate question, with Gary first assuming I was here on business. I suppose I am here on business, if ... read more
