The volcanic debris cleared away, this painting (and many others) survived to reveal some of the beautiful details they had in their homes. These paintings would be scraped off and replaced every few years for redecorating.

The wording around this large marble bath states who paid for it and how much they paid (alot of money!), as a sort of ad for the responsible person. Trump Towers comes to mind.......

The wording and picture depicted in this mosaic floor was placed at the entry to the home. We saw this in several of the more elaborate Pompei homes.

A straw cover, which could be frequently burned and replaced, was used to put a bit of cushion on this stone hard bed. Yes, the people were shorter in 1st century AD as well. Average male height: 5'.

I drew on the doors with a pencil, Jessie painted all over our house with White-Out, and this child used something to express their creativity into the walls of their home too. Some things never change.

Florence and Naples are both high on the agenda
Thank you for writing this blog. We have been thinking about going to both Naples and Florence but just haven't come around to make it happen yet. This photo is fabulous. Really great shot! /Ake

I'm honored to receive your compliment!
You two are probably my favorite blog to browse on travelblog. So to receive your nice comment really made my day! Thank you! I hope to next travel to Rwanda to see the gorillas. I noticed that you have already been there. Any advice for what kind of camera equipment to carry? Best regards and keep on exploring and writing! Sheri

We loved Rwanda
We really loved Rwanda. There is plenty more to see there than the gorillas. Advice #1: Book the gorilla trip well in advance. Advice #2: Bring a camera you are comfortable with. For the gorilla tour make sure you are able to take photos even if it is raining. (I.e. either have a waterproof back-up camera or protect your non-waterproof well) Advice #3: When you visit the gorillas, bring protective clothes. Some plants sting. Even thin gloves is a good idea. Advice #4: Akagera NP (Safari) was awesome. I hope you read all our blogs from Rwanda. You might pick up one or two places there that might be worth visiting. Don't hesitate to ask for more advice on Rwanda. I am happy to answer any question you have. /Ake

Many thanks!
I really appreciate you taking the time to outline all the important bullets about touring Rwanda. I wasn't thinking of touring Akagera, so will have to reconsider. I'm off to review your blogs! Cheers!
