Ahhhh Rome beautiful one day mayhem the next and the next and the one after that. Definately need a lifetime to get to know the place and have it run through your viens. I think the spacecadets and my feet couldn't have crammed in any more. We happen to hit another public Holiday weekend so the crowds were horrendous.
But we survived (ie dont forget to look the other way when crossing the road either..wheeeewww! on that one.) We managed to see all the iconic sites including seeing the man... POPE Benedict during one of his saint day speeches to the gathering....that was cool even spoke in english for us pilgrims from downunder! btw that St Peters Bassilica is definately the best and biggest church we have seen so far worth the visit...massive inside!
We managed to see the tombs of past popes (not sure how many but there was a few...they sure turn them over) including the heavily crowded one for Pope John Paul II. Word of advice dress accordingly when visiting or you will be denied entry...I suppose it goes without saying.
So we did the Colo,
the Spanish Steps, Trevi Fountain managed to throw a euro or 2 in (not sure if I want to do Rome again at least not before I see the rest of the planet) visited the Pantheon (luv that building), Vatican City, Ruins, Churches and Alice in Wonderland.......Actually the latter was the name of the B&B we stayed at. In fact it was so out there it had a real lemon tree growing in our room. Alice by name Alice by nature and perhaps thats what tipped the judges to select it as a multi-award winning joint!
We didnt do any art galleries this time, but I did greet my favorite pop artist Roy Lichtenstien each morning with one of his nudes in the bathroom....I thought that was cool for an art officinardo like me!...Actually the whole place had pop art everywhere.
In Rome I also managed to have a Shirley Valentine moment at the laundromat! Well it goes like this if anyone has seen the movie My Beautiful Laundrette I became infactuated with the Laundrette chickie assistant who didnt know a word of English and me not a word of Italian (except for hand signals) hitting it off
whilst shes helping me with the washing machine and dryer whilst folding my smalls. Oh well it was fleeting but a nice girl nevertheless! I also think by the look of her jeans she uses too much powder or she may of out grown them! One for future reference 'doing coffee' and laundry!
I suppose if you travel you have to try the local cuisine. Im sorry but I could go past the Pizza which you can buy by the Kilo that is as in Kg. The variety of Pizzas come out on slabs you ask which one/s you would like and how big the piece/s, they weigh it you add a upsize Hieneken (660mls) you sit down to eat contemplating life and waistline all whilst watching the world go by....bliss.
Gee weez xmas is a wonderful time in europe I hope it feels the same back home. Here they set up outdoor ice skating rinks, lights everywhere and the plaza near our joint had a covers band singing english hits with an italian flavour mind you we did notice the singer sneeking a peek or two at the lyric sheet now and then, but hey top Sunday
night in the middle of winter. Also it seems the shops never close albeit they open around 10am. By the end of our stay spacecadet #2 had managed to go into every Ferrari store in Italy and princess must of taste tested every Gelato flavour on the planet.
BTW spacecadet #2 is still playing spot the gypsie and yes I have copped every sob story known to mankind, and in Paris I had the 'do you speak English' and the gold ring trick fested upon me (I always wondered what would happen if you said to them oh thanks for finding my ring!)
And girls yes Italian women do dress very Chic but it must cost them a fortune as clothes prices here are unbelievable..... actually outrageous. Just a question without notice do we have a tall/high boots fetish thingy going on in Aus. I must say some women really know how to wear boots! Add puffy parker jackets to that also!
So there you have it all 'ruined' out in Rome the flavour of the place can grow on you. We're of to Athens to expose the spacecadets to one half of their heritage that'll be
an insight for them!
