Siena Bell Tower
A shot from the Bell Tower of the main square in Siena where the Palio is ran. Well again we are behind on our blog. We have quite a few days to catch up, but we will finish with Tuscany and our travels there.
On Wednesday in Tuscany, we decided to have a quiet day at the apartment in Montepulciano. Ron & Lissa went on to visit more hill top towns with the car. We had a great breakfast then went for a walk through the streets. The shops are open early morning until about 1:30 pm and then they close until about 4:30 pm. We have noticed that this is the norm in this country. Which is okay with us since it gives us ample time to have a nap in the afternoon. We walked and walked, up and down thoses streets until we were exhausted. After our afternoon snooze we went shopping at the markets for groceries for the rest of the week. Then we made a wonderful dinner for ourselves. I have to say....the food here whether you buy it and make it yourself or go to a restaurant is absolutely wonderful...we can get really fat here. Funny though, we haven't gain a pound considering all the paste, bread and cheese we've been eating.
Siena
Here I am in the main square, boy was it windy. Thursday, we drove to Siena. What a nice town. We parked the car at the bottom of the hill and took a bus up to the centre of town. Again we walked to the main piazza. There was a beautiful church and of course a looming tower. We all decided to climb the tower stairs. 150 steps!! Just a prelude to the Vatican. We climb and I started to get a bit freaked out since I am a bit claustropobic. Dan of couse took great care of me. The stairwell is really shoulder to shoulder. But once you get to the top, the view is fabulous. You look down at the square where the Palio takes place every year. The Palio is a horse race in the main square. Each county has a horse and its a no holds bar event. Really cool. After the climb up the tower we shopped around. Again all the high end shops everywhere. Of course I had to buy some stuff.....
After our walk, we settled into an outdoor cafe for lunch and wine. At this point I think we were at 25 bottles so far....hiccup. There was a fellow there who

On Friday, we decided to take a train to Florence. Beautiful Florence. However, we didn't know that there was a holiday that day. Florence was brimming over the top with Italians. Very busy. We got tickets to the Accedemia, where David the statue created by Michaelanglio. Seeing David was absolutely mindboggling. You can sit there and stare at him all day..... Then we tried to get into the Duomo, but it was just crazy there, so we ended up walking around. After a day of walking around, we left an went back home to Montepulciano. Florence is a must see, but make sure you check for any holidays, otherwise you won't get into anything. Always check to see if you can call ahead for tickets.
On Saturday, we drove to Sorrento. The drive is 4 hours long and very scenic. Next blog is on Sorrento.
We really like your messages....so keep them coming. Let us know how everything is across
