My destination this time: Venice! (I'm actually writing this from St. Petersburg or "Venice of th... Read Full Entry

Gardens here are of the hanging variety and once again the wisteria was putting on a scented show.

Interesting way to hang the washing when you live in an apartment above a canal.

These houses were in a real street (still no cars though) lined with trees and each had its own little section...I imagine it would be costly to live here!

The pond surrounds the base of a large monument of a soldier with a lion and the little island in the middle of it was crawling with these little guys. The most common sight of the animal variety in Venezia was dogs on leashes.

There were three big hotels all with the name 'Danieli' side-by-side on the waterfront.

Back to San Marco to wander the shops in all the narrow little streets. These creatures were waiting to get eaten and so fresh that they were still moving...not today thanks!

I managed to resist but should have tried those bright green biscuits in the middle of the photo. There were restaurants everywhere, even McD's which in every city is handy for the bathroom!

There were masses of shops selling clothes, jewellery, shoes, bags, etc. In fact it's a shoppers paradise. In the Rolex window I saw a bargain watch for a mere 150 000 Euro, definitely not one of the "genuine fakes" like I'd seen in the bazaars in all the previous countries. This was the domain of the wealthy!

They didn't escape from prison either. Anyone need a gondola?

I walked for miles in the twisty streets and got myself well and truly lost but it didn't matter at all because when you're on a small island you have to end up back at San Marco eventually. If you go to Venice make sure you get lost!

It was hilarious watching heaps of crazy tourists hold food out to make the pidgeons sit on their heads. Didn't really see the point myself but it was entertaining and the well-fed pidgeons weren't complaining.

It was initially built on a temporary basis out of wood in 1932 but has remained because of its popularity. The area around it is home to the Accademia galleries which house some of the best Venetian art and the Peggy Guggenheim collection.

This apparatus on the wall of the tower in San Marco Piazza measures various things including the height of the water, which is necessary in a city prone to flooding.

Venice
They just get better and better. Your photos brought back wonderful memories of the few days we spent in Venice way back in 1994. I fell in love with it then, and all over again looking at your photos. Keep those blogs coming! Take care and much love, Susan
