So we arrived to Venice and looked forward to getting straight to our hostel... that proved to be easier said than done. First off, our directions were from a train station we had already passed, so we had to jump back on the train and go back 10 minutes the way we had already come. Then we had to find bus number 11 to Campground Fusina. Apparently there are two of them and one doesnt go to Fusina. Of course we got on the wrong one and were enjoying the air conditioning and as soon as someone heard me say "Fusina" outloud, we had 3 people telling us we were on the wrong bus, but of course we had no idea what they were saying and we were like "Fusina, yeah!" And they were like "Fusina, no!" "And we were like "No we ARE going to Fusina!" Anyway, you get the picture, finally they just pointed out the door, then we understood and had to get off and wait a half hour for the next bus. So we got there and checked out the new digs. It was like a campground on the water, but we were in a little trailer
type thing with 2 beds. I'd refer to it more like an oven when the sun beats down on it, and you step outside and its at least 15 degrees cooler than where you have to sleep. There was also a pizzeria, bar, little market, and restaurant right there just for the campground. That night, we went to the bar to watch the Australia vs. Croatia footbal game, and there just happened to be a couple bus loads full of Aussies there watching as well. I have never seen them in action while watching a game but it was intense. Everytime Australia scored a goal, everyone would jump up and start hugging each other and banging anything they find on the ground then yelling "Aussie Aussie Aussie.... oi oi oi!!" And when Australia won the game they blasted the song "Land from Down Under" and drank into the wee hours of the night. It was so much fun just being around everyone, the World Cup is providing so much more entertainment than I ever could have imagined. Then the next day we slept in and took the train to Venice. Not much to do there but walk around and window
shop, but I still really loved it there. We took the Water Bus down the entire Grand Canal and stopped at Piazza di San Marco, which pretty much let us see all of Venice. It was so beautiful there, hot, sunny, blue-green water, which really stank too by the way. Its cool being in a city where there are no cars, not too much noise, and it was fun getting lost in all the narrow streets and bridges. I could imagine being there with a significant other would be much more romantic and you could find more things to do there, so when Heidi started eyeing me in that weird way again (kind of like in Paris) I knew it was time to go. Ha ha just playing :P We stayed there for about half the day then went back to our campground and hung out. They had a sumo wrestling competition in the beer garden with everyone who was staying there. Got some good video of that. There were a few Contiki bus tours that were staying there, and they pretty much took over the place. This morning we woke up and had to check out at 10 am,
and we dont leave Venice until night time so we had about 12 hours to kill. We got to the train station, put our bags in lockers and looked through the guide book and map to see where we could take a day trip. We decided on Verona, home to Romeo and Juliet. It only took about an hour to get here, so that wasnt too bad. Then we walked directly to the town's center and laid down in the shade. It has to be almost 100 degrees out there... ugh. I also had some of the most amazing pizza... I know I say that everytime, but seriously this was the best, and soon I will be indulging in some more gelatto... and possible more pizza. We still have a couple more hours to kill before going back to Venice, who knows... maybe some more napping in the shade is in my future. All I know is its our last day in Italy and I haven't fulfilled my pizza-gelatto quota. Must work on that.... right now... ciao
