Kelsey and I on the train to Venice
Venice- Part 1

Saturday June 13

We traveled all day to get to Venice. We took the tube, a train, a plane, a bus and a boat to get there. We took the Vaparetto 1 boat and went down the Grande canal to get to Venice. It was breath taking. I had no idea what to expect, it is so beautiful here. There are no cars in Venice, boats are the main form of transportation. There were police boats, ambulance boats, taxi boats, "bus" boats, "car" boats, cargo boats, and gondola's. The only place is Venice that has cars is Lido where the beach is. So we arrived in Venice, took the Vaparetto to Dorsoduro, the Island in Venice we were staying on, and checked into our hotel. We are staying at the Hotel Bell Arti. It is in the heart of Venice and we are very close to everything.

Once we got settled into our hotel, we walked around the south bank and explored. Everything is so colorful and full of energy. We had dinner on the water at "Caffe la Piscina." It was a nice seafood restaurant, I ordered the tagliolini with mussels and clams. The

four of us split a bottle of wine and enjoyed our first night in Venice. For desert we had Gelato in Piazza San Marco, the major square in Venice, and watched the Dueling Orchestra's as the sun set. The square is so large that orchestra's set up outside of different restaurants and "Duel", one orchestra plays something and then the other tries to top them. It was amazing! I have never seen anything like it. We read in our travel book that Campo Santa Margartia is the place to be seen and where the younger people hang out, so we headed over there. We had a drink at a place called "Orange" and watched the people go by. All day I was in a constant state of shock. It is so beautiful and wonderful here.

Sunday June 14

After we got ready we had breakfast at our hotel. The breakfast was really simple, they had meats and cheeses, breads, cakes, coffee, and croissants. After breakfast we walked to the Rialto Bridge Market and shopped around. There were tons of people there, this was definitely a tourist area. We had lunch at the "Ristorante Milibran" off a a side

alley in the Rialto area and Jaime and I split a delicious al crudo pizza, which has ham on it. After lunch we went back to San Marco square and went to the Basilica Church and the Campanile bell tower. The ceiling in the Basilica was incredible, it was unlike anything I have every seen before and the view from the top of the Bell tower was also gorgeous. Because it was Sunday they were alot of choirs singing all over Venice in different square's. There are no words to describe how great the choirs were. I have decided that I am going to have a different type of gelato everyday, so after our walk to get gelato, we sat on the terrace of our hotel and took a breather.

One of our goals on the trip was to take a gondola ride. There were so many gondoliers advertising that that was an easy goal to reach. Our gondolier was really great and gave us a history of Venice as we went along the canal. We picked the perfect time to go, it was early evening and not crowded. It was so quite that we were able to go

down a side canal, and it was like we were the only people in Venice for awhile. After our ride, we had dinner a "Gianni's" and then went back over to Santa Margarita for some more people watching. We tried a different place this time called the "Trattoria due Torri", and then went back over to "Orange" and ended up meeting some students from California who were also studying abroad. It was a great evening. We began to notice a pattern in our behavior, we came to Venice with no plans except to relax and have fun, and that is exactly what we are doing. All we have done is eat, walk and repeat! We are having a great time.

Part two is still to come . . . .
