Venice
Me and some of my roommates When coming to Italy I knew there were places that I definitely wanted to go and things that I had to see. For me, Venice was a place that I didn’t really care if I got a chance to visit or not. I don’t know why I didn’t care if I went, but I just didn’t. When I was in Switzerland half of my roommates went to Venice for the day, and when I came home they showed me pictures of the car-less city. It looked pretty cool, but I still didn’t have a dire need to go visit. Thursday night we were sitting around the kitchen table and my other roommates were talking about how they were going to Venice on Friday; I decided to just go and see what it was like… I had nothing to lose.
Thursday night my whole apartment went out together. All eight of us went to a restaurant near the Duomo and enjoyed a nice meal outside. Some of my roommates know the manager which was awesome. He kept bringing us carafes of house wine and appetizers. After we ate our meals he brought out desserts for us to sample and then a

Literally, there are no cars there huge dessert pizza. The dessert pizza was INCREDIBLE. It was a thin, sweet pizza crust topped with Nutella and some kind of cream (maybe mascarpone). The on top of that was another pizza crust which was drenched in melted chocolate. We attacked the dessert pizza and probably finished the entire thing in under 30 seconds. We didn’t get home until almost midnight from dinner, and then decided to dance around the apartment. I probably ended up going to bed around 1, and we all had to be up at 5am to shower and get to the train station.
Waking up at 5 am was unbearable. I was so tired and miserable; my head was throbbing from the night before. I almost threw in the towel and went back to bed, but I decided to still go to Venice. We made our way to the train station, bought our tickets and then got on the train. The train took a total of around 3 and a half hour and we had to switch trains in Bologna.
When getting close to Venice you could see all of the water from the ocean which was pretty cool because Florence isn’t near

Trying on sailor hats on the street any ocean water. When we finally got off in Venice, the smell of salt water immediately filled my nose. The aroma gave me such a sense of home and being at the beach; the instant association made me immediately like Venice.
We didn’t have any major plans for the day, which was great. We just wandered around Venice and took in everything. The windows adorned were with different a variety of glasses in all of the colors of the rainbow. There were also handcrafted necklaces, bracelets and rings in every shape and size. There are really no cars there, and everyone uses a boat to get around. It was really interesting to see how people adjust their way of living to accommodate the fact that their streets are made of water. It was so cool to see all of the boats going around and the waterways were amazing. Venice is sometimes criticized for the dirty water in the canals, but I didn’t find it to be too disgusting (but after all, I swim in Long Island Sound).
All day we wandered, got lost, ate a lot of really good food and drank a lot of really good wine.
Bridge
This is the outside of the main bridge in Venice. It has a ton of little shops on it We went on a Gondola ride which was fun. The tour guide told us a lot of interesting things about the city and we were able to go into little channels that we wouldn’t have seen otherwise. The ride also offered an awesome view of the major bridge from the Grand Channel. After the Gondola ride we went to San Marco. San Marco was awesome; when you walked to the end of it you could see nothing but ocean. There were also a million pigeons there; I kept myself amused for 20 minutes trying to catch them. If you had food (I was given some by a little girl, probably around 8, also trying to catch pigeons with me), they would literally fly up to you and land on you.
At the end of the day we had to rush around a little to make sure we got to the train in time. We found a restaurant near the train station which was decent. We had extra time after and some of the girls wanted Gelato so we set out to find a place. In our search for gelato, we stumbled across this little whole in the wall winery.
We went inside and there were enormous jugs of wine all over the place, with a little Italian man behind the counter. There was a chalkboard resting on the counter with prices for liters of wine. I asked him how it worked and in return he asked me if I had a water bottle. I gave him a puzzled look, so he pulled out a water bottle from behind the counter and asked which wine I wanted. Of course I asked him what his favorite red wine was, and he steered me in the direction of the Pinot Nero. I trusted his recommendation and got a full water bottle of it. Honestly, it is probably one of the most delicious wines I have ever tasted in my life. It is sweet, but not too sweet; and not dry at all. It was amazing. Actually, sitting here at 11 in the morning I just had a sip to remind myself how good it was.
After purchasing our wine it was time to go home. For a place that I didn’t even want to visit, I had a unbelievable time. We were in Venice for 10 hours and it seemed as
Fish Market
This is the site of one of the oldest fish markets, it runs from 7- 1 daily if we were there for not even half that time. Venice was an experience that I am so grateful that I did not miss out on.
