A comment about the following photos--
I'm not religious, I'm not one for pomp & circumstance. I am however Christian, as I feel I would be a right fool not to leave the door open to possibility. How would one explain @ the end of time "I just couldn't 'go' for it". Ignorance. Ego. Foolhardy. For me, science & "something else" can go hand in hand. I've had my own experiences, I cannot explain. I have left the door open for good reason. I take literally thousands of photos of churches. The reason? Art tells a history of faith.
Art is emotion, is pain, art is joy, art is a reflection. Art is from the soul of the artiste, is a mirror of society. Art is expression, feeling, meaning, desire, hope....art is love. Real love & dedication to one's own spirit. Words fail me to express what I intend here.
If you can enter
The statue
A gorgeous work of art by the sculpture Colasanti a church & absorb the "whole package"........ the sight, the smell the intent in which it was presented, the...........feel. The Blood the sweat & no doubt the tears shed behind the centuries it took to "show" faith, hope. The energy....... energy is never lost, it's simply displaced, dispersed or perhaps "replaced", moved, changed, but it will always exist. We only have to imagine what it would have been like to be "one of them" when touching a hand hewn stone..... their era, their history, their faith. Leaving our own prejudice's behind- a BIG ask. Art is an understanding.
Art is a concept. Art is a force.
Art is not simply bought & sold @ Christie's. Art embraces centuries of sorrow &....... elation.
This is why I photograph Cathedrals. It is rare one will ever find, in history, another building that represents a society. Towns, villages, cities, religions, populations, faiths, will have poured their every last cent into their representation of morality or pride. The best artists, whether they were recognized or not @ the time as such, were taken on board to complete the task @ hand. To represent. To "be".
One will find the sculptures, painters, masons.... will be those
who were often unrecognized in their time. The warmth of wood, the power of stone= will outlive us all & they understood it's purpose, as self serving as one may view it.
Everything is different "today".
In days past, people gave their lives, literally, building what we now appreciate.
I take thousands of photos, all over the world. I select but a few to show "everyone".
It was strictly forbidden to take some of the photos displayed in my travelogue here. For those I did take "questionably", I apologize. It must be said- I will never take a photo of someone in prayer-hence my reason as to why I haven't a photo of the entire Porziuncola. There was a woman, praying; believing. My camera is silent, without flash. I will not, however, interfere with her relationship with her beliefs.
Respect.
Santa Maria degli Angeli is the 7th largest Christian church on the planet. Alessi & Vignola have much to be proud of. To be given a task to enclose the 9th century church, given to Frances by the Benedictine Monks, in such a way that encompasses everything they believed in....... I do believe they had &
Chapel of St. John the Baptist
St. John the Baptist baptizes Jesus in the Jordan; Painting by Giorgetti..I think have succeeded.
Assisi, has no symmetrical structures evidently....... heh, could be due to the HEAT! HOT, I mean stifling here!!!!! LOL, no I'm teasing, no doubt due to the constant reconstruction over the centuries. Here's an interesting point... I asked someone (who actually "appeared" out of their home) "What's the deal with all the stoned-up doorways?" Get this; A door(wall), usually with a step the the outside, is dismantled (or torn down) to carry the dead out of the home :O!!! Everyone seemed to have a stoned up doorway next to their own "public" entry!
It's no joke when I stated in the photos "Where are the people?" No one around.... in a village that receives literally MILLIONS of pilgrims every year..... look @ my photos! It was ......... a bit spooky! I must say. Having an affinity (LOL) to photograph without the throngs of tourists is one thing..... seeing so few is something else.
It's late, more soon, night all! xox
