These past few days have been very busy with going to a fashion show and several museums. I would have to say that the fashion show was not my favorite thing that we have done but I still enjoyed it. It was very beautiful, extravagant, and it was very fast paced. However, fashion is not really my forte. I am sure that the apparel design and merchandising majors loved seeing a fashion show first hand rather than viewing it online. I honestly did not even know that it was two separate designers that were showcased until one of my roommates was talking about it. I knew that the Concept Korea fashion show had two shows, Bmuet(Te) and Beyond Closet, for the event but I just assumed that they were both by the same designer.
Apparently the first show, Bmuet(Te) “Weird but Beautiful”, was created by the designers Byungmun Seo and Jina Um. The Bmuet(Te) meaning of “weird but beautiful” is very fitting for their design choices. One such piece that comes to mind is an ensemble for the men that was made up of shorts, a white scarf, and a long overcoat that was undone at the waist,
with either long socks and shoes or boots on. It was beautiful at a glance, but it was very weird to see such pieces with one another. To me it seemed contradictory to have shorts with an ensemble that was meant for a winter line. It is to my understanding that this first show was meant to be for a shock value display and that it would probably never hit the market for the public. I, for one, am quite glad of that. It used a lot of neutral colors that were aesthetically pleasing but it did not do it for me. That entire line was just a bit too strange for my taste.
The second line, Beyond Closet, was created by Ko Taeyong. Now this line I could see being released to the public for winter wear. One of my favorite pieces from this collection was the ensemble with darker blue pants with the embroidered fish and the purple sweater with the dog wearing headphones motif paired with a tan jacket. I unfortunately did not get a picture of that piece, but it was a mixture between the preppy and laid-back look. A lot of the
collection was for Italian casual wear. I would say that for Kentucky those pieces would be for more of a done-up look but still slightly casual.
As for the museums that we have visited for the past week, my favorite has been the Instituto degli Inocenti. My favorite painted piece from the museum was Madonna of the Innocenti that was composed by a Florentine painter. The piece that I am referring to depicts the virgin Mary sheltering a group of children that vary in age under her cloak. This piece is thought to have been used as a standard in the processions representing the orphanage. I love this piece because it shows Mary sheltering all the children as if they were her own and that was the goal of the orphanage because they took in children no matter what class they were when born into. This piece just struck me with awe because of its importance and its representation.
My favorite sculpture/statue would have to be of Mary Magdelen that is made of wood. She is shown with a very somber expression, long hair that somehow intertwines with her dress, and her palms pressed
together in prayer. In a lot of depictions of Mary, she is described as being very young and beautiful. I really enjoy having a different representation of her because it is very uncommon and refreshing. This piece was done to show her later in life after she had become a hermit. I honestly had to keep myself from crying over this piece. Something about it just struck me with emotion.
The Insituto degli Innocenti is very unique because it is the actual building that used to be the orphanage. Something that I thought was very unique was that they kept some of the keepsakes that were left to the children when they were left as infants. The most interesting piece was what looked to be either a coin or medallion that was broken. This would definitely be a museum that I would recommend to anyone that was traveling to Firenze or if they were just travelling near it. I didn’t get to spend much time there, but I could be there for hours just looking at all the art work and history that is there. This museum would have something for everybody.
