Outside Vatican city
Street outside Vatican City where we discovered the delicious gelato...yum Keeran writing again today:
Battling to wake up in the cold so early in the morning, mom dragged us out of bed and said 'If your'll wanted to sleep then url should have just stayed in SA!'
Taking lessons from the previous night, we togged ourselves real warm and set off for VATICAN CITY- the home of the Pope. Max wrote the directions for the metro which were very complicated because we had to know the stations as well as the direction the train was going in.
Vatican City was AMAZING! Picture this, you are walking thru Rome and then you suddenly walk into a different world! One moment you are in a busy city and the next you find yourself in a huge plaza surrounded by beautiful towers and monuments. Actually we didn't know this but the Vatican is it's own country. They have their own government, a monarchy with the Pope as head of that monarchy. They also have their own standing military, the swiss guards, who according to vatican law have to be good looking! In Vatican City decapitation is legal so don't mess with the Pope! Vatican city is also the smallest country in the world and
Enter: Home of the Pope
Entrance thru the arch into Vatican city it has the lowest birth rate and here's more...
what a coincidence that on that specific day the Pope was giving a speech at the Vatican, so the whole of the Vatican City was outside the church listening to the Pope speak. I felt really priveleged to be there at that particular moment.
Although the queue to get inside Saint Peter's Basilica was very long, we had a pretty short wait before getting into the church. This was the first European church we have visited and it was AWESUM!!! The ceiling was beyond words and I just could not get enough of this absolutely beautiful place. Mass was going on while we were there and I loved the way the choir's voices echoed throughout the building. (Krisel was totally bored and looked like she could seriously do with some shopping!!!) After spending two hours inside the church, marvelling at everything in sight, I could feel the weight of my heavy jacket building on my poor little shoulders.😞 We were now hungry, so on our way back, we thought we would try this restuarant that we had seen just before entering the walls of Vatican City. We found some Nigerians who
Outside St Peter's Basilica
It was Sunday so there were masses of people outside the Basilica listening to the Pope's speech tried to sell us fake Guess and Gucci handbags at extremely high prices but we told them nicely, "you can't fool us South Africans". Then we found the place advertising the pizza and lasagne for 2euro(R22) & we thought wow so cheap but it was a tourist trap!!!It was the most awful tasting lasagne and pizza ever!(the lasagne actually tasted like it was gone bad!!)
That was basically our conclusion of our stop in Vatican City. I can't say much more than, I urge everyone to go here...it is beautiful. Pictures don't do it justice...neither do words. Just go!
Cindy's edit: We bought the most delicious ice-cream(gelato) on this freezing cold day-but everybody was eating ice-cream regardless of the weather. The ice cream cost 3euro(R33) each for 1 scoop!!! I promised nyself that I would never moan again to buy a whole tub of Gino Ginelli in SA for R33!!!
