Good bye Venice, city of canals and off we went to Rome. It was quite a long trip. In all, we left Venice around 8am and got to Rome at around 3.15pm. Would love to say what happened on the bus...but bus rides are long and boring...and nothing much happened. There was some great scenery though, including a few villages on top of hills or mountains.
During the evening, we were taken to see the Campidoglio. Basically that is Capital Hill for Rome. It was designed by Michelangelo and I was impressed going walking in there. As we entered up the steps, we were greeted by these two magnificent statues on either side at the top. Once past those statues, the square opened up to three magnificent buildings on either side of us and in front of us. In the middle of the square stood a replica of the statue of Marcus Aurelius. It may be a replica but it was still impressive.
Off to the side, we took a walk where we had views of the Roman forum. It was there that Julius Caesar was murdered and Marc Antony gave a speech later on. Walking through there was like
taking a trip back in time, back to the times of the Romans and how life would have been back then. We were then taken to the other side where we saw the symbol of Rome, a statue where Romulus and Remus suckled by a she-wolf.
Should I return to Rome, I would like to see this by day, I think it would have been even more impressive.
After this tour, we went to dinner. Another good time out. It was a SIX course dinner. It started off with some prosciutto which was great. On the plate was this black thing which looked like a grape. I haven't even had a drink yet. So, after finishing the prosciutto, I had a taste of it, thinking there were dark grapes. No. They weren't. They were black olives. And I don't like eating black olives.
This was followed by some toasted bread, some topped with tomatoes and others topped with cheese. Those were nice, so nice that in fact I had 2 of the cheese ones. This was followed by pasta. Not a small pasta, a whole full plate of pasta. This was starting to make me full. The pasta was followed up by
a full plate of salad. The dressing was nice but I knew I was starting to reach my limit.
Then finally out came the pizza. I was so stuffed by then, I only had quarter of a pizza. Then again, it was only supposed to be a quarter each. It was a very simple and thin pizza but it was a nice pizza. I probably would have enjoyed it more if I wasn't so full. Then dessert was a tiramisu. What can I say. YUM! It was gone in less than 60 seconds.
During the dinner, we were serenaded by Elizabeth, a soprano. She sang some various opera pieces and really got everyone involved. I'm not into music but I could tell her voice was superb and probably hit the tones right.
After dinner, we headed back to the hotel for a good night's sleep. All I remember was, I'm too full, I'll rest then out like a light. Hence the blog was not updated yesterday.
Until later, when I come back from dinner to tell you about the Vatican and Colosseum.
