Our day started early with a longish drive to the south and east of Venice to Ca Salvio. This route follows the coast and along a broad spit and avoids the inland route and the zoo that is Venice Island. Here we caught a ferry along the lagoon to Burano. We have been here before but it is such a pretty and interesting island that it is always worth another visit. As the day progressed it got to a much warmer than expected. 28 degrees.
The shops are interesting and mostly containing the same items, however some are better than others. The glassware, jewellry, linen clothing, scarves and lace ware were colourful and of a good quality. We bought some items for ourselves and for Mum who is about to turn 99.
The place was a zoo despite it not being high season. The boats were full of people, it was noisey, and it was crowded. However, this was compensated for by being colourful and full of wonderful views of houses, canals, bridges, and an array of people both huge and normal.
The sub-strate is obviously soft as almost al towers around Venice are on a lean!
We visited the lace museum which was well worth a visit as I hadn't realised just how fine the detail is from one thread and needle at a time. I had thought it was like tatting with many bobbins.
Our next port of call was to Torcello where we had hoped to have a nice quiet beer and lunch. It started out well until a huge tour party arrived. What a racket! However, our lunch was very good. One point that we can make is that so far to date we have had no disappointing meals. Italian chefs are great cooks -the meals are the right size, beautifully cooked and well presented.
While on Torcello we visited the ancient basilica and the bell tower of San Maria Assunta (strangely the same name as that at Aqueleia). The basilica was built in the 5th century and added to over the years. It is from the Byzantine era so does not have the typical Christian look about it. It is a fairly grim building but with a lovely mosaic floor and some interesting details - told to us by a walky-talky - with a very Catholic bias and faith.

Typical colourful house
The tower behind is actually leaning but not showing much here to the tower where we puffed our way up 40 metres of steps and slopes to the top where we had magnificent views out over the lagoon and into the distance in every direction. Because it is so flat, you can see for miles.
Lastly, we were back home in time for Diego to pack up his family and the campervan to head for the beach, whilst Pierina was left to feed and entertain us. Piero is still sick so we still haven't seen him. Maybe tomorrow. Pierina took us to a popular pizzaria at Belfiore for dinner which turned out to be a hoot whilst we tried to communicate with her, and her with us! Fortunately we were saved by a waitress who could speak some English. We loaded up the Translate App and once we had it working properly we were able to chat to a certain degree. Our pizzas turned out to be huge! What the heck would anyone want a pizza that big for?!!. We took back what we didn't eat for dinner tomorrow.
