Laurea!
Me wearing Anneliese's roommate's Laurea wreath, which you have to wear when you graduate Prague
Over the Easter break Bronny and I headed to Prague to meet up with Wisey for a week.
Unfortunately the cold weather (it snowed almost every day) and the hearty Czech cuisine didn’t agree with Wisey and Bron, so the first few days were a bit slow. Eventually, feeling like a hyperactive child, I was able to bully them out of bed and we escaped the confines of our hostel with its creepy reception man, and burst out into the beautiful, magical, fairytale city that is Prague. We visited the two palaces, saw Mozart’s Don Giovanni at the marionette theatre, watched the very over-rated clock tower strike the hour, visited the Jewish quarter, and basically just walked around enjoying the gorgeous sights, frequently ducking into cafes and pubs to escape the freezing weather. We met up with Wisey’s brother Tim and his girlfriend Leah, who happened to be in Prague at the same time as us, which was great. All in all it was a lovely week, but, as has been the case every time I’ve been away, it was nice to return home to Bologna.
Life In B-Town
Back in Bologna the sunny days are becoming frequent enough
Wisey, Bron and Me in Praha
The view of the city from the Palace that the Australians and I have stopped feeling the need to call each other every time the weather reaches the late teens and scream down the phone “Quick it’s hot, let’s go do outside things!” We’ve also learnt the hard way not to celebrate too much, joyfully leaving our jumpers at home, only to get hypothermia when we stay out too long and have to walk home in the 4 or 5 degree temperature of the evening in a t-shirt.
Life at home with my housemates is great, although they think I am a bit of a joke, with a life that consists solely of going on holidays and just generally going out and enjoying myself. They find it extremely hard to believe that I have a busy and purposeful life in Sydney, including being a good student that actually studies. My reputation in the house is not enhanced by my constant failure to deserve the title “domestic goddess”. This is mainly because of the bad relationship I have with our washing machine. Not only have I flooded the kitchen by opening it when it wasn’t finished, but a week ago Maggie had to sit me down and explain
Bronny and Wisey
In front of the river that all the times I thought it was blocked and twisted the knob to start it again, it had actually finished its cycle, and I was turning it onto the next cycle, effectively washing my clothes at least three or four times. At least they were clean!
Julian and Bron came to visit for a couple of days which was a lot of fun. Unfortunately we failed to show them the best of the Bologna night life as, on the advice of a friend we took them to “Estragon” which was meant to be “very classy, just like Matis” (a club we really like). Decked out in party dresses and high heels (well, not Julz) we stood open-mouthed outside Estragon which was in the middle of the countryside, in a big tent, and resembled nothing so much as the aftermath of a rock concert. However, being optimists we made the most of it and still had a great night.
Chiara's Compleanno in Milano
The following weekend Evelien and I went up to Milan for Chiara’s birthday (“Piccolina, you’re going on holidays again!?!” my roommates exclaimed when I farewelled them). We did the normal Milanese things: shopping at the
fresh food markets, the vintage markets and the flower markets, having a fabulous birthday dinner, going to a fun club and managing to get a lift home in a limousine with some boys from Torino.
Berlusconi, George and Megan
We returned to Bologna on the eve of the election. Bolonga as a city was decidedly unimpressed when Berlusconi won (one of Bologna’s nicknames is “the red city” for its very lefty leanings). We heard that our teacher was arriving in Bologna, so Liv, Marie and I decided to leave. We headed to Lake Como for the weekend to indulge in a bit of George Clooney-stalking (sadly unsuccessful) but it was beautiful all the same. We also visited nearby Lake Lugano in Switzerland, home of Megan Gale when she’s working in Italy, which was another perfectly serene and stunning lake. We returned to face the reality that we are actually in Italy to STUDY, as we attended meetings with our teacher and handed in assignments, but we didn’t let that fact get us down for long, because we’ve all started to plan our summer holidays! I’ve also only got two weeks to go until my parents come to visit. I’m
definitely looking forward to seeing them and showing them around my home.
Missing you all!
Love Laur xx
