We are in Bologna. When we travel we like to get to know an area so we are using Bologna as our home base for a week while we take a couple of trips into the nearby cities. We hope to get a pretty good feel for Bologna and start to get a feel for Emilia-Romagna. The trip over was quite smooth. We drove to Montreal and took off from Dorval to Amsterdam and although we’ll have a wait at the border to get back into the US on our way back it will be worth it as it was our shortest trans-Atlantic crossing (5 & 3/4 hrs). This was much appreciated since trans-Atlantic crossing can about as much fun as a digital exam. The Amsterdam-Bologna flight was uneventful although flying through the Alps with the still receding snow in the high peaks and the valleys turning green was quite spectacular and reminded us of Tour and Giro alpine stages. Once in our hotel, we got ourselves showered and luckily, Chris didn’t do a faceplant into the bed from too much ativan this time. We headed to get a bite to eat (not an easy thing on a Sunday at 1:30 in the afternoon). Near our hotel we passed a massive parade of carabinieri (police). They mostly looked older, so it must have been former or retired carabinieri, but it was nice to see this cross section of Italian culture. The hotel recommended a nearby restaurant that we easily found on the Via Independenzia. We of course wanted to try regional specialties so we got tagliatelle con ragu (ragu is what the local call a la Bolognese, while tagliatelle are also typical of Bologna) and lasagna (also local). Both were really tasty. It was enough to satisfy the hunger pangs, but we didn’t want to get too full so we could try more local food. Ambling up the Via Independenzia, we found a café that served piadine. We split a piadina with prosciutto, fontina and arugala which was excellent. Heading further up the Via Independenzia, we saw a tiny street to the left with a market. It was great seeing the local vendors with an array of local goods such as candies, cheeses and hams in a tiny medieval street. By now the jet lab caught up with us and we headed back to the hotel for some much needed
