After a run Trying to visit Amalfi, Positano and Sorrento in the same day was extremely ambitious, but I woke up early Saturday morning with every intention of making that happen. That morning I went on my first run since Spain and surprisingly 3 miles didn't hurt that bad. The ocean views and breeze may have helped a little to distract me from how out of shape I've gotten. Breakfast at the B&B was on a cute terrace and everyone ate together (me, Emanuela, Bart, and the other two guests from Austrailia). It was a very standard Italian breakfast... fruit, yogurt, coffee, juice and pastries and it was really nice to have that time to get to know everyone. After breakfast I figured out my train route and made it on the bus to Amalfi by 11 am. The bus route went along an extremely narrow two lane road on the steep coastal cliffs of Campania. The views are world renowned and inarguably break taking, but I was stuck in the middle of enjoying them and being freaked out by the huge bus seeming to teeter on the edge of the road when turning. I arrived in Amalfi around 12 pm, immediately got some

pizza and walked around the small town for a couple hours. The weather that day was the best of my time in Campania so I decided to rent a chair and lay by the beach for a while. Around 3 pm I started craving gelato, pretty standard for that time of day, so I got my daily fix then hopped on another bus to Positano. Positano has even better views and beaches than Amalfi, which is saying a lot, but it is much more crowded and everything is expensive. I didn't stay long, but while I was there I did manage find the most amazing lemon ice from a cart near the top of the main street by the bus stop. By the time I arrived back in Sorrento in was about 7 pm and I was exhausted, so unfortunately exploring Sorrento was limited to the bus ride through the city. I took the Circumvesuvia back to Vico, stopped near the B&B for a quick slice of pizza (yes pizza again), then I went to bed. The next day I woke up with every intention of taking the hydrofoil (fast ferry) to the Island of Capri but a storm ended

Church in Amalfi up squashing that plan pretty quickly. There was a break in the rain long enough for me to make it out to a grocery store and grab lunch, but it picked up again around 2 pm so I spent the majority of the day inside. The only times during this trip that I have felt homesick is when I've been sitting around doing nothing, which has been extremely rare. That day was a lot of sitting around, and just when I was starting to feel a little sad Bart knocked on my door and invited me to join them for dinner. Bart made bruschetta, pasta pomodoro and two different bell pepper mixtures that are typical dishes in Vico. After dinner we spent more time getting to know each other, shared pictures and stories, and future travel plans. It definitely ended up being one of my more memorable nights and I am so thankful to have been included. The weather was much better the next day and I was able to make it to Capri. To get there you have to take a boat from the Port in Sorrento that is about 20 minutes and costs around $20, not too bad.
When I got off the hydrofoil I really had no idea where to go or what to do. Luckyily, my experiences have been that when you have that look on your face like you are lost someone always notices and offers help. A waiter at a restaurant saw me, offered me a map, circled the best places to go, and told me how to take the train to the city center. As has been pretty standard when I get to a new city, I find a place to eat and spend a little time looking at the map to orient myself. I stopped at the reasonably priced cafe, had a panini and a moretti and picked out the places I wanted to see. I chose one of the best view points of the island, the main piazza and the Augustus Gardens. The view was over Faraglioni which is a huge coastal rock formation that is caused by erosion, and the garden was a beautiful and peaceful place to sit and read. On the way back to the port, I walked by a shoe store that handmade and sized leather sandals right on the spot. With my affinity for shoes, it
was impossible for me to not purchase a pair 😊 By the time I made it back to the B&B that night it was time to pack and get ready for my train ride back to Rome. The early morning of travel went smoothly and I was able to meet Heather at the hostel by 10 am. The next couple of days in Rome should be interesting as I will be staying in my first real hostel, in a 6 bed dorm room. Wish me luck!
