The best thing about travelling by myself was checking in at the Train Station in Hong Kong and not having to worry about a thing until I got on the plane. Stupid me got confused on where to go of cause and forced my ticket into the wrong counter, because I lacked to read the signs but all was good at the end.
Soooooooo after my annoying 12 hour flight from Hong Kong to Roma, I arrived the same time as my parents who arrived with 20 other San Lupesi, to the heat and chaos of Roma airport! Loved the fact that everyone was looking at me trying to juggle my 27kg bag along with 2 pieces of hand luggage... My Italian passport came in handy as I passed all the other foreigners and walked straight through without a word, and without a stamp 😞 It took a few hours to get to San Lupo on the bus - we arrived by 11.30am and I didnt expect much, the place looks exactly the same!
The day we arrived - the 27th July - was the first day of the festa of our patron saint and it goes on for 3 days worth of festivities. Apart from all the religious stuff, it was great to socialise with other paesane including other Australians and my best friend Jeanette from New York who I havent seen in 2 years - so it was a bit of a catch up for us! The festivities of the day was a mass and small procession of the town olding candles, afterwards is a gathering of the streets or in the piazzas eating, drinking, buying stuff on the bancarellas and for me for then anything catching up with all my guy friends who I havent seen in ages - either getting ignored by there jealous girlfriends or became existant when they werent around!
The following day the 28th, by the afternoon was another procession with a marching band with women wearing traditional clothes holding pots of grain on there heads and men walking with oil... again the same stuff went on at night.
The 29th is the actual feast day... we got all dressed up and went to mass with the bishop at 11am and then went out onto the piazza to wait for the statue of San Lupo to come out before following it,the marching bands X 2, ladies holding candles and the Australians holding a sign from Sydney lol... I never normally walk, but this year Mum and I did half and then waiting on the piazza for the end of the procession before going home to eat. At night, Jeanette walked around the bancarellis (street stalls) and bought bags, jewellery etc, went to the bar and drank a bit getting a little drunk and presented the band with a bunch of flowers --- soooo embarrasing! By 2am they had the fireworks and I didnt get home until 4am as we stayed on the piazza drinking beer, eating nuts and having a laugh... too funny, didnt need to walk home either as an old friend of mine offered to drive me home on his moped 😉
The next lot of days have been relaxing, eating and socialising... weather has been a little shit, very unpredicitable and storms like you wouldnt believe. Love the fact that I have meet so many more Australians that you normally dont even see or knew existed back home...but this town and its people never change and thats the way I like it!
