Day 4 - The Ring of Kerry
They were expecting gall force winds up to 60 mph from Hurricane Gordon the evening before but it went up north along the east coast causing outages and downed trees all the way up to Dublin. We woke up to a beautiful sunny day to tour the Ring of Kerry. We started out with Batt again making our way around the peninsula. Our first stop was Ross Castle in Killarney. It sites over a small lake at the edge of town. Next, was this little area called the Bog Houses. Here they harvested the peat from the bogs, dried it and used it to burn for heat. The dried dirt looked like a small presto log. Kinda weird they burn dirt. They still use this today to heat many of their homes in Ireland. On the way, we stopped to take pictures from the mountain top of Kells Bay. All the views on this trip were spectacular! Our next stop was Skellig Rocks. This is on the National Heritage List of Sites. There is a cruise that you could take out to see the small town built into the rocks but it was so

windy and choppy that it would not have been too fun of a ride. We headed back to Kenmare with a short stop overlooking Waterville Harbor. It was this beautiful little port town we couldn’t help but take pictures. We eventually got in to Kenmare to find our B&B, the Shelbourne. It was this awesome old “farm house”. For a “farm house” it was beautiful. The rooms were huge with king beds and sitting areas. Sandi and I decided to stay at the B&B and enjoy the place while the guys headed into town to check out the pubs. We eventually all decided to enjoy the house by getting wine, cheese, meats and breads and enjoying a night in. We had a great time catching up on our blogs, playing cribbage and laughing the night away. Later, we found out that the owner’s son was in the Olympic’s for Ireland in the giant slalom. His name was Thom Foley. Kinda cool.
