We head out early from Smyrlabjorg on our way to Myvatn. It's pouring, like usual, and my shoes are drenched from my run.But as we head Northeast, if you look very carefully, there may be an odd patch of blue sky. We're heading towards the Northeast but Route 1 first takes us along the eastern coast. It's gorgeous, as we head between the sea and the mountains. and of course there are waterfalls everywhere. Iceland must have the most waterfalls per capita of any country, and that's not just because there are so few people. We detour a couple of times, get on some poor, lonely stretches of road, and the drive takes forever. Eventually we get to Seydisfjordur, a tiny, picture perfect postcard town. A local group is filming Alice in Wonderland; the town, nestled ... read more

After a great, sleeping tablet plus jetlag induced sleep, we had the hotel breakfast (excellent - we learned quickly that breakfasts included with accommodation are good deals as they can fill you up for much of the day) of fruit, eggs, fish, breads, cereals and pastries (We didn't have all that. That was on offer) and good coffee - the coffee standard is high in Iceland. We went off to collect our car from Atak rentals which had received good reviews. We got a little Toyota Yaris, not normally our family's market (we are 5 people) but with just 3 of us on this trip, we found we could squeeze in all our luggage. a relief because that hasn't always been the case... We're heading out to the Golden Circle, and within 5 minutes we're lost. ... read more

I had arranged our itinerary so that we would go to the Laki crater on this day. We had to go by bus tour because we had no 4x4; we had chosen Laki instead of Landmannalaugur because the bus tour to Laki gives you much more time to walk around and explore. So when I went for my early morning run (and on a family trip that's not so easy; you have the challenge of going out early without waking anyone else up which is only possible with a flashlight and a nice sized bathroom far removed from the beds.) and summarily got drenched within 5 minutes, my spirits sank. However, as vacation organizer in chief in our family my role is a cheerleader so on return I convinced my wife and son (but not really ... read more

By travellingdad We arrived at Keflavik airport tired ( the direct flight from Seattle leaves in mid afternoon, and with the time change gets in early in the morning so you miss out on the night), cold (somehow with all our traveling experience we assumed summer would be at least warm, not fully appreciating how seriously one should take the name ‘Iceland’) but excited. The airport is very organized. The excursion busses and desks, cafes, and cash machines are straight in front of you as you head towards the exit. There is no need to book any excursion from the airport beforehand; it can all be done right there. We had decided to go to the Blue Lagoon before heading off to the hotel in Reykjavik. The bus had a rocky start, when one piece of ... read more

I was so excited conming here...more excited than I have been in a very long time. A new air company... Air Iceland... all so new. I got so many lovely insights...the scale of time, volcanos, hundreds of years of continuous written history, almost no carbon footprint, everyone we met has been so nice and helpfull, lovely food, not so expensive, fantastic landscapes... and the list goes on and on. This is just a note from the spot, i hope to elaborate when i get home, so keep tuned. Doug.... read more

Okay, so I'm slacking on the blog entries. It seems like each day, 75% is spent seeing things and 25% is spent planning things to do next. I don't mind it, really, especially now that my sleeping schedule is beginning to get on track. Each night I write down what I did during the day so that I remember. Seems like a bit of a blur since I landed and catching a cold over four rainy days in Reykjavik didnæt help much, either. I landed in Oslo yesterday morning, but want to catch up on the things that happened in Iceland, so you'll just have to hang in suspense (all 2 or so of you who I imagine check this blog...) My second day in Reykjavik was mostly dedicated to sleep. I befriended a Canadian man ... read more

Few minutes to write before heading out into the rain. PHOTOS TO BE ADDED LATER AS THIS INTERNET CONNECTION IS PAINFULLY SLOW. With all the running around leading up to the trip, it didn´t really hit me that I was leaving until I was sitting on the runway at Logan. A little excitement, a little anxiety, at that point I couldn´t turn back so it was really all arbitrary. The flight was choppy and I didn´t sleep well (my seat wouldn´t allot me the .3 inches of reclining that really doesn´t make a difference, but really does, all at the same time.) Flight was somewhat choppy and I probably got about an hour of sleep before landing in Keflavik at 6.15 GMT (there´s a 4-hour time difference between here and Boston.) The ride from Keflavik to ... read more

... read more

I'm not sure how much exactly I had stayed awake, the flight from Hong Kong was just too long and have been vomitting badly for the whole 13 hours flight to London Heathrow, when I reached Rekjavik it was next day evening. The capital, used to be one of the most expensive city in the world in terms of living standard - before the financial crises. Before I came to this country, I heard that everything is so cheap, currency has been slumped more than 60% since 2008, however, Iceland is still expensive even compares for European standards. We arrived Keflavik Airport in late afternoon where the last airport bus to the city, was waiting for all passenger on our flight. So I had to purchase my shuttle ticket quickly and exchange the money that I ... read more
