Today we explored the well trodden route for tourists, the Golden Circle. Luckily we had our own car and could cruise off a little later than all the tour buses and avoid the really busy times.
The Golden Circle includes 3 main sites:
1. Thingvelleir - the site of the parliment in the old times of Iceland, it has great lava formations and crevasses from where its location on one of the fault lines has played effect.
2. Geysir - a spout that erupts in a geothermally active area - it raises to about 80m every 3-5 mins (cameras at the ready..... along with everyone else!)
3. Gulfoss - a really stunning waterfall (more to come though!) with 2 tiers that gushes down lots of tonnes of water! Frequently has rainbows over it, which also makes for more nice photos. You can see one of icelands icecaps from the ridge on top of the waterfall too, which is quite exciting - it was the first glimpse of an icecap we had whilst in iceland.
We stayed in a place called Hveragerdi (which Al insisted in calling Herdigerdi....), not bad, had puffin on the menu.....
